EVENING PRAYER FOR A YOUNGER

[ocr errors]

CHILD.

LORD, our Heavenly Father, I thank Thee

for bringing me in peace to the end of another day. Pardon all that I have done wrong this day, in my words, thoughts, and actions; and enable me to repent truly of all my sins. Make me thankful to Thee, O God, for all the good things which I have enjoyed this day; for food and clothing; for companions and friends; but more than all, for teaching me that Jesus Christ came into this world to save sinners. May I every day learn to know more of Christ, and to be like Him; so that when He comes again to judge the world, He may receive me into His everlasting kingdom. Bless my parents, and brothers and sisters, my schoolfellows, and all my relations and friends. Have mercy upon us and take care of us all this night, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Lord and Saviour. Amen.

PRAYERS FOR OPENING SCHOOL IN THE MORNING.

Sing a Hymn.

Read one of the following portions of Scripture :— Psalm i.; iii.; xix.; xxiii.; one of the por

tions of Psalm cxix.; Psalm cxxi. 1–12. John v. 39–47; xv. 1-12. iii. 14-17. 2 Peter i. 19-21.

Matthew v. 2 Timothy

Read alternately the Song of Zacharias:-
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, &c.
Let us pray.

O Lord hear our prayer.

And let our cry come unto Thee.
O Lord open Thou our lips.

And our mouth shall shew forth Thy praise.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, we thank

Thee that Thou hast graciously preserved us to see the light of another day. It is of Thy mercies that we are not consumed, because Thy compassions fail not. We are sinful creatures, we have broken Thy commandments; and every day of our lives we commit many sins in thought, word, and deed, for which we deserve to be punished. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, and for-give us for Jesus Christ's sake; give us grace to repent of all our past sins, keep us this day from falling into sin, and enable us to amend our lives according to thy Holy Word. Make us truly thankful for all thy mercies both of Providence and Grace; and teach us to shew our gratitude and love to that blessed Saviour who first loved us, by living to His praise, and walk

ing in the way of His Holy Commandments. We ask every blessing for His sake, our only Lord and Saviour. Amen.

LMIGHTY God, who hast taught us in Thy

Holy Word to pray for all men, for kings and for all that are in authority, we humbly beseech Thee to bless our gracious Queen Victoria, the Prince Albert, Albert Prince of Wales, and all the Royal Family. Have mercy upon all that are put in authority; and give them such wisdom and strength that they may exercise the power committed to them, for the glory of God, for the welfare of the people, for the defence of the Church, and for the promotion of true religion. Give Thy blessing, O Heavenly Father, to all the Bishops and Pastors of thy Church, that they may preach the unsearchable riches of Christ, and feed the flock which He has purIchased with His own blood. Look down in mercy upon all Christian congregations, that they may receive with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save their souls. We beseech Thee to have mercy upon all men, to relieve the poor and the afflicted, to comfort those that are in sorrow, to convert sinners from the error of their ways, to put down Satan under our feet, and finally to establish the kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ upon earth.

We beseech Thee to hear us, good Lord.
Son of God, we beseech Thee to hear us.
Son of God, we beseech Thee to hear us.

O Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world;

Grant us Thy peace.

Favourably with mercy hear our prayer.
O Son of David, have mercy upon us.

MERCIFUL God, grant that the old Adam in us may be so buried, that the new man may be raised up in us. Amen.

YRANT that all carnal affections may die in us, and that all things belonging to the Spirit may live and grow in us. Amen.

YRANT that we may have power and strength

G

to have victory, and to triumph, against the devil, the world, and the flesh. Amen.

G

RANT that we may never be ashamed to

confess the faith of Christ crucified, and manfully to fight under his banner, against sin, the world, and the devil; and to continue Christ's faithful soldiers and servants unto our lives' end. Amen.

The Collect for the Day.

ALMIGHTY GOD, who hast taught us in

Thy Holy Word that every good gift and every perfect gift cometh from above, even from Thee the Father of lights, we beseech Thee to send Thy blessing upon all Schools for Christian education; and more especially we pray Thee to look with Thy favour upon this school for the children of thine Ancient People Israel, in which Thy good providence has placed us. Bestow upon us the gift of Thy Holy Spirit, as the fountain of all true wisdom, and the source of all useful knowledge. Impart to those who teach, the spirit of power and of love, and of a sound mind; and give to those who learn, an attentive, teachable, and humble disposition. Above all things, be pleased, O Lord, to open our understandings, that we may understand the Scriptures; teach us to love Thy Holy Word; and grant that we may earnestly desire to know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent, whom to know is life eternal. Implant in us the spirit of brotherly love and kindness one toward another, and of lowliness and reverence towards all who are set over us; and grant that following the blessed example of our Saviour Christ, who for us became a little child, we Thy children may daily increase in wisdom and in stature, and in favour with God and man. We ask these and all other
