Kingdoms wide, that sit in darkness!
Grant them, Lord, the glorious light;
And from eastern coast to western,
May the morning chase the night :
Chase the darkness

From their long benighted eyes!

Fly abroad, thou mighty Gospel,
Win and conquer, never cease!
So Immanuel's fair dominions

Shall extend, and still increase,
Till the kingdoms

Of the world are all His own.

HEATHEN DARKNESS.

"The times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent."-Acтs xvii. 30.

S

EE the world in Satan's bondage,

Bound in sin's degrading chains!
Sinners helpless, lost and dying!
All is death where Satan reigns!
Darkness brooding

On the face of all the earth!

Light of them that sit in darkness!

Rise and shine, thy blessing bring :

Light, to lighten all the Gentiles !
Rise with healing in thy wing;
To thy brightness

Let all kings and nations come.

May the heathen, now adoring
Idol-gods of wood and stone,
Come, and, worshipping before Him,
Serve the living God alone;

Let thy glory,

Fill the earth as floods the sea.

Thou, to whom all power is given,

Speak the word; at thy command,

Let the company of preachers,

Spread thy name from land to land:

Lord! be with them,
Alway, to the end of time.

123 DEPARTURE OF A MISSIONARY.

"I will give to Jerusalem one that bringeth good tidings."

W

ISAIAH xli. 27.

ITH all thy pow'r, O Lord, defend,

Him whom we now to Thee commend;

Thy faithful servant, Lord, secure,

And make him to the end endure.

Help him by thy sufficient grace,
To speak to Zion words of peace;
Thy truth and mercy to declare,

And Jesu's name to Israel bear.

Protect him from each deadly snare,
Make him the object of thy care;
Nor let him as thy pilgrim rove,
Without the convoy of thy love.

With holy zeal his heart inspire;
Give him the Spirit's heavenly fire,
With power Divine to speak thy word,
And tell of thy Salvation, Lord.

Thus shall thine Israel's long lost sheep
Turn, and with godly sorrow weep;
And Hebrews shall Thy praises sing,
Their own Messiah, Saviour, King!

124 DEATH OF A SCHOOLFELLOW.

"Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me."-2 SAMUEL Xii. 23.

EATH has been here, and borne away

DE

A brother from our side;

Just in the morning of his day,
As young as we, he died.

Perhaps our time may be as short;
Our days may fly as fast!

O Lord impress the solemn thought,
That this may be our last.

We cannot tell who next may fall
Beneath thy chastening rod;
One must be first, but let us all
Prepare to meet our God.

All needful strength is Thine to give ;
To Thee our souls apply
For grace to teach us how to live,

And make us fit to die.

125 DEATH OF A HEBREW CHILD.

"In him there is found some good thing towards the Lord God of Israel."-1 KINGS XIV. 13.

APPY the children who are gone

HA

To live with Jesus Christ in peace; Who stand around His glorious throne, Redeem'd by blood, and sav'd by grace.

The Saviour, whom they loved below,
Hath kindly wiped their tears away;
No sin, no sorrow, there they know,
But dwell in one eternal day.

There to their golden harps they sing, While tens of thousands join their songs, Hosannas to th' immortal King,

To whom immortal praise belongs.

O gracious Saviour! when shall we
Be brought with them in bliss to join;
Thy lovely countenance to see,

And sing thy mercies all divine!

ANNIVERSARY HYMN.

"And they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children, and turn again."-ZECHARIAH X. 9.

SPAR'D to another year, O Lord,

Once more we meet within this place;

We come to tell thy praise abroad,
To hear thy word, to seek thy grace.

O may a sense that thou art nigh,

Our hearts with holy awe inspire: Check the vain thought, the wand'ring eye, And banish every wrong desire.

And whilst, with mingled love and fear,

We in thy service bear our part; Give us, O Lord, the hearing ear,

Give us the understanding heart.
