of mind, meekness, long-suffering; forbearing one-another, and forgiving one-another. "If thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone; if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

3Peter (one of the disciples) came to Jesus, and said, 'Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?' Jesus saith unto him, 'I say not unto thee, until seven times; but, until seventy times seven.'

"Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ; and if any man have a quarrel against any; even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

"As ye would that men should do to you, ye also to them likewise. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest; for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful."

ILLUSTRATION. Parable of the unmerciful servant.

"The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down and besought him, saying, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.' Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.

"But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants, which owed him an hundred pence; and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, 'Pay me that thou owest.' And his fellow servant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me and I will pay thee all.' And he would not, but went and cast him into prison till he should pay the debt.

"So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord after that he had called him, said unto him; 'O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow servant, even as I had pity on thee?' And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tor

mentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.

"Jesus said, "So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. For if ye forgive men, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yours."

The duty of brotherly kindness.

"By this shall all men know that ye are disciples of Jesus if ye have love one to another. 2 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. Beloved, let us love one-another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

Be

Let love be without dissimulation. kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one-another. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind, let each esteem other better than themselves. We that are

strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not himself, but as it is written, 'The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.' Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God; and let all your things be done with charity.

8"Comfort yourselves together, and edify one another. And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake; and be at peace among yourselves. We exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly,-comfort the feeble-minded,-support the weak, be patient toward all men. See that none render evil for evil unto any man, but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. In all things shewing yourselves patterns of good works that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. 10 Be all of one mind, having compassion one of another; love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous; not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing. "And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men; 12knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing."

"A certain lawyer said unto Jesus, 'Who is my neighbour?' And Jesus answering said, 'A man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

"And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out twopence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, "Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.'

"Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?' And he said, 'He that shewed mercy on him.' Then said Jesus unto him, 'Go, and do thou likewise.'"
