out spot who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

"Those things which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. Our Saviour Jesus Christ gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity: "for God hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; ; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.

8"To you therefore which believe he is precious. For ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. 10 Grace be unto you, and peace, from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth.-"Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. 12 And unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen."

Chapter Thirty-ninth.

SANCTIFICATION.

Sanctification, the work of God.

1"GOD hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth. Ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. It is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. And we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. Faithful is he that calleth us, who also will do it.

"Jesus, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. "Both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren. His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue : whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these we might be partakers of the Divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 9" We are sanctified by God the Father, and

preserved in Jesus Christ, and called. 10 And we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all: for by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified."

The importance of a godly life.

"As God who hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. 2 Follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness; because it is written, "I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy.' And without holiness no man shall see the Lord.

7

"Christ loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. And you that were some time alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreprovable in his sight: if ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel.

87This I say then; walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the

flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

9

"If ye be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth at the right hand of God. Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 10 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

11"Abstain from all appearance of evil: and the very God of peace sanctify you wholly. 12 Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God; 13 but let the mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. 14 Let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: 15 for this is the will of God, even your sanctification. 16I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified."

Christ's prayer for his people's sanctification.

[ocr errors]

"These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name. And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth thy word is truth. For their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be truly sanctified through the truth.

"Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou
