ther knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you, Matt. vi. 32, 33. And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things, Luke xii. 29, 30. And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way for divers of them came from far, Mark viii. 3.

VER. 2.

Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Οψίας γενομένης λέγετε, Εἰδία· πυῤῥάζει γὰρ ὁ οὐρανός.

He answered and said unto them,a When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.

a And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. And when we see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time? Luke xii. 54-56.

A a wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

Then Jesus said unto them, a Take heed and beware of bthe leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

b Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees, Matt. xvi. 12. And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod, Mark viii. 15. In the meantime, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy, Luke xii. 1. Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth, 1 Cor. v. 6-8. And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymeneus and Philetus, 2 Tim. ii. 17.

Οἱ δὲ διελογίζοντο ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, λέγοντες Οτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἐλάβομεν.

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.

Which a when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?

Πῶς οὐ νοεῖτε, ὅτι οὐ περὶ ἄρτου εἶπον ὑμῖν, προσέχειν ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρι σαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων ;

How a is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? X 2

But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men, Matt. xv. 4-9. But woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in, xxiii. 13. For the Sadducees say, that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both, Acts xxiii. 8.

VER. 13.

For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high-priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted, Heb. ii. 14—18.

Οἱ δὲ εἶπον· Οἱ μὲν, Ἰωάννην τὸν Βαπ τιστήν· ἄλλοι δὲ, Ἠλίαν· ἕτεροι δὲ, Ἰερεμίαν, ἡ ἕνα προφητῶν.

And they said, Some say that thou art a John the Baptist: some, b Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

a And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him, Matt. xiv. 2. And they answered, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets, viii. 28. And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again, Luke ix. 8. They answering_said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again, 19. And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people, John vii. 12. Many of the people therefore, when they heard this say. ing, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? 40, 41. They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet, ix, 17.

VER. 15.

Λέγει αὐτοῖς· Ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνα με λέγετε Tras;

He saith unto them, a But whom say ye that I am?

a He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given, Matt. xiii. 11. VER. 16.

̓Αποκριθεὶς δὲ Σίμων Πέτρος εἶπε· Σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστὸς, ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ, τοῦ ζῶντος.

And Simon Peter answered and said, a Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
