-Harper's Magazine for April contains a valuable study of sleep under the title The Ape of Death. Henry Cabot Lodge's History of the Spanish-American War, which is appearing serially, is the most satisfactory account of the late struggle yet published, Aspects of Rome, by Arthur Symons shows rare insight into the modern life of the "'eternal city," Thirteen days in unexplored Montenegro is a valuable travel sketch, and Russell Sturgis' Equipment of a modern city house deserves careful reading. We must mention also The trial of the Oregon, and the Rescue of Admiral Cervera.

Self-Culture for April contains four illustrated articles, Among the Canadian Rockies, Princeton University, The Hawaiian Islands, The German Army and its Organization, The Franco-Siamese difficulty. The departments are full of interest, and instructive papers on various topics solicit attention.
