PREFACE.

IT has been said that "to inform the mind, affect the heart, and promote the best interests of mankind, must ever be considered as a pleasing and honourable employment. Various means indeed may be made use of in order to accomplish these ends. Some do good by wise and judicious conversation; others, by constant and laborious teaching; and many, by an excellent and uniform character." The Editor of "The Servants' Magazine has attempted to contribute something towards so good and desirable a work.

At the completion of this the thirteenth year of our labours we have the pleasing testimony afforded to the usefulness of our Magazine by its increasing circulation; indeed, we are proud to say that it has been found necessary to reprint some of the former volumes. Our readers, it is to be hoped, will still further increase the circulation by recommendation among their acquaintances.

By reference to the "Index," it will be seen that much has been introduced of quite a novel character, compared with the volumes of former years, which we trust will be found not only entertaining but really useful, for instance "New Testament Geography," with its accompanying Map.

We tender our warmest thanks to our increased number of correspondents, and to our old friend "Grandfather Gray," for their assistance during the past year; and for the results of their own observation and experience we shall at all times feel grateful.

In conclusion: this volume is ushered into the world with an ardent desire that it may conduce to the glory of God, and to the good of man; but, at the same time, with a full conviction that "neither is he that planteth anything, neither he that watereth, but God that giveth the increase."
