dead, which die in the Lord; yea, saith the spirit, they rest from their labours."

Let her example, my dear reader, lead you to stop and ponder. How are you using the talents committed to your care? In what channel are you directing your influence, whether small or great? Have you worked for the cause of Christ? Has the constraining love of God first led you to seek His grace for yourself, and then to endeavour to instil it into others? You confess the superiority of true religion; have you felt its vitality in your own heart? Have you been faithful in all entrusted to your charge, as one knowing he must render an account? Are you a servant? Your position in life is useful and respectable; it affords many opportunities of doing good. Walk humbly in the station marked out for you; fulfil with diligence your appointed duties; you will thereby gain the esteem of those with whom you live, as well as the approval of your own conscience. Read your bible, and seek a blessing on it; pray often and earnestly that you may be directed aright. You may be surrounded by difficulties, and find it hard to pursue the path of duty among those you serve; temptations may assail you, strength may seem well nigh failing; but, my dear friend, there is a footstool of mercy at which you may bend,- -a throne of grace to which you may approach.

Approach, my soul, the mercy-seat,

Where Jesus answers prayer;
There humbly fall before His face,
For none can perish there.

Your infirmities are known, and strength will be given to pass through. Imitate the example of Sarah A. in your temporal affairs. Be an early riser, punctual to time, and active in work; thereby you may secure

much leisure to yourself, without neglect of your duties. Never leave a situation for the love of change, or without a sufficient reason; endeavour to continue long in a place, and gain friends among those with whom you are. Be careful of your wages, neat and clean in your person, but not extravagant in expenditure; try to make some saving for times when you may need resources of your own.

THE DAY OF THANKSGIVING.

Oh! the bright day of thanksgiving hath arisen on our land, And round the altars of the Lord, with songs of praise, we stand;

We see the faces that we love still beaming at our side,

And the new-born cherub, Health abroad, on the blue heavens doth ride.

The Holy One hath bent His ear,-He heard Britannia's cry,
When thousands of her children fell, in bloom of life to die;
He saw His people plead the blood which cannot vainly pray,
And bade the great destroyer sheath the sword, and pass away.
Oh! hasten to His hallowed courts, Oh! lift your voices high!
Ye shelter'd, ye protected ones, saved at the point to die;
The shaft was at your bosom, and the sword hung by a thread,
But Jehovah looked upon the cross,-and " "Tis enough," He
said.

Oh! hasten to His hallowed courts, and fill them with a song,
Ye aged, lift your trembling hands, your silvery tones, ye young.
Come, happy mothers, bring your babes,-unblighted, living
things,--

And lay them on the shrine of Him who hid them with His wings.

Come, youthful bride, and as thou cling'st to thy beloved's form, Rejoice that it was spared, 'midst the lightnings of the storm; Come, rosy band of little ones, shout round your father's knee, Because ye are not orphans, as many young ones be.

Come, gentle maiden, on whose arm, a darling mother hangs, And speak His praise who shelter'd thee from parting's deadly pangs;

And, as ye kneel around the shrine of the preserving One, Pour out your melting hearts, to be meet incense at His throne. Nor ye, with sable robes and weeping eyes, remain aloof,— There is sweet balm of peace for you, beneath this sacred roof; The same kind hand that sheltered me has wounded you indeed,

But why? that it might bind upwhat it hath made to bleed: It pierc'd a channel to your hearts for Love's exhaustless river, Which, perchance, except for this keen dart, had been shut out for ever.

Emma.

MY MOTHER'S NOTE-BOOK.

Plum Pudding.-Take six ounces of raisins, twelve ounces of flour, six ounces of suet finely shred, two eggs beat up with a little milk, and add a little salt and ginger; then boil the whole together for four hours. If wanted to be richer, take of raisins, flower, and suet, eight ounces each, four eggs, a little nutmeg, ginger, and salt, and boil the pudding eight hours.

Puddings.-The yolks and white of eggs, beaten long and separately, make the article they are put into much lighter: when eggs are used with flour, they should be well worked into it before any milk or water is added; if eggs are dear, a spoonful of fresh yeast in a pudding will answer the purpose of two or three of them; or, in winter, a little snow. When a pudding is boiled in a cloth, it should be dipped into a little cold water before the cloth is untied, to prevent it sticking.

Pea Soup.-Lean bacon, half-a-pound; water, eight pints; split peas, one pint; carrots, turnips, and onions, two of each; add pepper and salt. Put them in a pan, set it on the fire, when it boils take it off, then let it simmer by the fire three or four hours, until the peas are quite tender. The bacon should be cut into thin strips.
