in this still and quiet hour, while kneeling before thee, the God of heaven, to pray to thee in spirit and in truth-in the only way which thou wilt accept with the heart, and not with the lips only. me not whilst at thy throne of grace to my own dull and wandering thoughts. Oh Holy Spirit, descend upon me, and fix my mind on heaven and heavenly things. Lord, I thank thee for the mercies of the past day. What am I, that thy blessings should be so many and great. Oh that, as I ought, I may love thee more and serve thee better. Forgive what thou hast seen amiss in me, for in many things I displease thee. Often I leave undone the things which I ought to do, and do those things which I ought not to do. Pardon me, good Lord, and turn my heart to thyself. Enable me to follow the example of my blessed Saviour.

Like him, may I be meek and lowly in heart. Oh, may I never cherish anger, wrath, malice, or pride; but may I be clothed with humility, remembering that God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. Make me contented and thankful in all my enjoyments, humble in every thought about myself, charitable in my feelings and conversation respecting others, sincere and faithful in my professions, just and upright in my dealings, diligent and cheerful in my employments. In all my duties may I look to the Spirit of grace for willingness and power to serve thee; and recollecting my own natural and actual sinfulness, may my entire dependence be upon the merits of Jesus, to render my imperfect services such as thou wilt mercifully accept in him. Grant thy protection and blessing, oh Lord, to my dear

keep them from all evil; impress on my heart the duties I owe them; and if it should please thee to preserve us through this night, may we rise in the morning with hearts full of love to thee and zeal for thy service. Heavenly Father, I pray unto thee in the name of Christ Jesus my Saviour, and for his sake I beseech thee to hear me. Amen. Our Father, &c.

THURSDAY MORNING.

My beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. 1 COR. XV. 58.

ALMIGHTY GOD, Maker of heaven and earth, my Creator and Preserver, and the

Giver of every thing I enjoy, I bless thy name for thy gracious care of me from my birth unto this hour. I praise thee that thou hast kept me in

safety this night.

preserve me from

I look up unto thee to evil this day, especially from the great evil of sin. May the angel of thy presence tarry round about me, and the God of angels be my shield. Dispose me to live in the obedience of thy will and to the honor of thy name. Restrain me from the evils and follies into which I am prone to fall, and grant that I may think and speak, will and do the things that are well-pleasing in thy sight. May I be thankful for the means of improvement which I enjoy, remembering that much will be required from those to whom much has been given. If thou art pleased to lengthen out my days upon earth, in youth may I be industrious, in the prime

of life may I be active in doing good, in the vale of years may I be blessed with an approving conscience, and be found in the way of righteousness. Whilst I live here help me to be useful and virtuous, and when I die may I be cheerfully resigned to thy will, and prepared to join the society of the wise and good in thine own presence. Oh blessed Jesus, send thy good Spirit into my heart, make me love to obey thee in all things, and preserve me from every wrong word and action, every unholy and unchristian temper. Almighty God, let thy tender mercies abound towards me in the forgiveness of all my sins, for the sake of Jesus Christ; and since. I have much to be forgiven myself, make me always ready to forgive others likewise; and incline me to be merciful, even as thou, my Father in heaven, art merciful. Bless all
