Nu. 6, 23-27. THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. MARK. ECCLESIASTICAL tradition universally testifies that Mark, the author of this Gospel, was the same as John, surnamed Mark, the nephew or blood relation in some sense of Barnabas. He is mentioned Acts xii. 12, 25; xiii. 5, 13; xv. 37-39; Col. iv. 10; 2 Tim. iv. 11; Philemon 24; probably also 1 Pet. v. 13. It is supposed also that he is the party referred to in the Gospel, chap. xiv. 51, 52. The Gospel was originally written in the Greek language, but both Hebraisms and Latinisms are found in it. That it was intended for Gentile readers, is inferred from the author's explanation of Jewish customs, chap. vii. 2, 11; xii. 18; xiii. 3; xiv. 12; xv. 6, 42; and the scarcity of quotations from the Old Testament. The narrative, though brief, is exceedingly graphic and circumstantial, abounding in minute incidents not noticed by the other historians-i. 13; i. 15; ii. 26; iii. 5, 17, and 21; iv. 26-29; v. 13 and 41; vi. 39 and 41 ; vii. 34 ; xiv. 68 ; xv. 40 ; xvi. 2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15-18 and 20. This, combined with other considerations, favours the opinion that Mark wrote his Gospel under the direction of St. Peter; and tends to disprove the opinion that his Gospel is a mere abridgment of that of Matthew. The probability is that none of the Evangelists, except perhaps John, saw each other's writings. Their verbal agreement is sufficiently accounted for by the oral account common to the whole congregation of believers. In Mark we have " a graphic picture of the official ministry of Jesus." He records rather the works than the discourses of our Saviour.
