Unto the Galatians, written from Ephesus. The Epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the EPHESIANS. (Acts 238, 30.) THIS epistle was written by St. Paul in the early part of his imprisonment at Rome. The alleged absence of the words rendered "at Ephesus" (ch. i., 1), in the early manuscripts, and the want of those special allusions to persons and events have given rise to a conjecture that this was a circular epistle, and equally intended for several communities in Asia Minor. The contents of the epistle certainly agree with this supposition; but something more than ingenious conjecture must be advanced before we can consent to negative the positive evidence in favour of Ephesus, arising from the almost unanimous agreement of all the manuscripts. The difference of style between this and that of some others of the epistles of St. Paul, can be sufficiently accounted for, if we suppose that the apostle, now in prison, leaving for a little the style of a letter, set himself to compose something that might be a substitute for his personal ministration-a treatise on Christianity, doctrinal and practical, which might help to counteract the evils which he foresaw would arise from false teachers. Although it is not stated, yet we may infer from Paul's address to the elders at Miletus, and from the reason which he assigns for leaving Timothy there, that the church at Ephesus, as well as that at Corinth, required skilful treatment; and we may safely conclude, that the style in which this epistle is composed was suitable to the circumstances of the church. We may gather from the apostle's prolonged stay at Antioch, Corinth, and Ephesus, and the pains he bestowed on the churches of Jerusalem and Rome, that he considered it more advantageous to the dissemination of the truth to plant it firmly in great cities, which, as centres of influence, were the means of scattering the glad tidings everywhere.
