The Joint Committee on the Library has not acted towards acceptance of these works of art some gifts, some left by owners who cannot be located, some for which the records are incomplete and some works which cannot now be located.

THEODORE E. BURTON, a Representative and a Senator from Ohio. Plaster bust by Elizabeth Kidder Sparrow. Gift from the artist. Located in Room 1302, Public Works Committee, House of Representatives.

JAMES F. BYRNES, a Representative and Senator from South Carolina. Marble bust by Bryant Baker, presented to the Joint Committee on the Library in April 1948 by friends of Mr. Byrnes in South Carolina. This bust has not been accepted and is at present stored in the Office of the Architect of the Capitol.

HENRY FOUNTAIN ASHURST, a Senator from Arizona. Portrait painted by Azadia in 1941. It was hung in Room S-212, April 1964. This portrait is the personal property of Senator Carl Hayden, having been presented to him by Mrs. Louise Cromwell MacArthur Heiberg.

HAROLD R. BECKLEY, former Superintendent of the Senate Press Gallery. Enlarged photograph tinted in oil by Gladys A. Kazigian; located in the Press Room of the New Senate Office Building. This portrait was presented by the Correspondents' Committee.

THOMAS HENDRICKS, a Representative and Senator from Indiana and a Vice President of the United States. Portrait by unknown artist. In 1910, it was located in the Senate Judiciary Committee Room; present location unknown.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN, a Representative from Illinois and a President of the United States. Portrait by Boris B. Gordon; located in the Office of the Secretary of the Senate. This portrait was placed in the Office of the Secretary of the Senate in 1946 with the consent of the chairman of the Joint Committee on the Library, in order that it might be available for view by the committee, for consideration for purchase. To date, no action has been taken with respect to its acquisition.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN, a Representative from Illinois and a President of the United States. Portrait by Griswold Tyng, formerly located in Room S-229, now in Room S-113, Senators' Private Dining Room. This portrait was presented by the family of the late Senator Kenneth S. Wherry in January 1952 as a gift to "Future Senate Republican Floor Leaders."

HENRY CABOT LODGE, a Representative and Senator from Massachusetts. Portrait by Boris Gordon. Stored in the Senate Janitor's Office on the Senate Terrace.

JOHN T. MORGAN, a Senator from Alabama and chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations at the time of his death in 1907. Portrait by Carl Gutherz. The records of the Architect of the Capitol indicate that this portrait is the property of the daughter of the late Senator Morgan. The portrait was offered by his daughter to the Joint Committee on the Library in 1910, but no action of acceptance was ever taken. The portrait has, however, remained in the Capitol since 1910, its return never having been requested. It is presently located in Room S-339 in the Capitol.

JUSTIN MORRILL, a Representative and Senator from Vermont. Portrait by Carl Gutherz; formerly located in the office of Senator Warren R. Austin; now stored in the Senate Janitor's Office.

FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT, former President of the United States. Portrait by unknown artist. Presented by the National Italian American Civic League, 1937; in storage in the Office of the Architect of the Capitol. No record available as to whom this portrait was presented.

MORRIS SHEPPARD, a Representative and a Senator from Texas. Portrait by B. Godwin, 1939. Located in the Architect's Storeroom. No record available on this portrait.

ROBERT A. TAFT, a Senator from Ohio. Portrait painted by Rudolph Bernatschke in 1953; located in the office of the Senate Minority Leader. The portrait was presented by the artist June 17, 1959 to be hung in the office of the Republican Senate Floor Leader in the Capitol, Room S-230.

HARRY S. TRUMAN, a Senator from Missouri, a Vice President, and a President of the United States. Portrait by Greta Kempton; located in Room S-310, Office of the Majority Whip in the Capitol, Senate side. No information available to the Architect of the Capitol as to the ownership of this portrait.

NICHOLAS VAN DYKE, JR., a Senator from Delaware. Portrait by Jefferson D. Chalfant. The

records of the Architect of the Capitol indicate that this portrait was presented to the Senate in 1914 by the great granddaughters of the late Senator Van Dyke, and although received by the Joint Committee on the Library, was never accepted by that committee. Its present ownership is doubtful. The portrait has remained in the Capitol since 1914, and its return has never been requested. It is presently located in the Office of the Senate Majority Leader, S-210.

DANIEL WEBSTER, a Representative from New Hampshire and a Representative and a Senator from Massachusetts. Portrait painted by Francis H. Cumberland in 1961; hung in March 1963 in Room S-146, Senate Appropriations Committee Hearing Room. This portrait was a gift of the artist. Records not completed.

Paintings and Portraits on Indefinite Loan to the Capitol

Paintings-Not the Property of the Government CONSTITUTION, UNITED STATES FRIGATE ESCAPING FROM THE BRITISH FLEET IN 1812, by F. Mullen. This painting is located in the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives, in the Extension of the Capitol. It had been located since 1932 in his former office near Statuary Hall. Information furnished by the Clerk of the House indicates that the painting is the property of the Navy Department, having been originally loaned to the Senate Committee on Naval Affairs.
