in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

20 And how our chief priests and rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel. And now, beside all this, (to-day is the third day since these things were done,)

22 Certain women of our company have affrighted us, which before it was day were at the sepulchre,

23 For when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had seen also a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.

24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they found not.

25 And he said unto them, O fools, and hard-hearted with regard to all that the prophets have spoken:

26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and thus enter into his glory?

27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went and he made as though he would have gone further.

29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward

evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in with them.

30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed God, and brake it, and was offering it to them.

31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked by the way, and opened to us the scriptures?

33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how they knew him in the breaking of the bread.

36 And as they thus spake, Jesus stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you it is I: be not afraid.

37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

39 Behold my hands and feet, that it is I myself: handle, and see for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any thing to eat?

42 And they brought him a piece of a broiled fish, and an honeycomb.

43 And when he had eaten before them, he took what was left and gave it to them.

44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.

46 And he said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

47 And that repentance and re

mission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

48 And ye are witnesses of these things.

49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye here in the city, until ye be endued with power from on high.

50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.

51 And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.

52 And they, worshipping him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

53 And in the temple were praising and blessing the Lord. Amen.

ST. MARK

I1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;

2 As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight the paths of our God.

4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach repentance for the remission of sins.

5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judæa, and all the people of Jerusalem, and they were baptized by him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

6 And John was clothed with camel's hair, and had a girdle of a skin about his loins, and did eat locusts and wild honey.

7 And he preached the Son of God, saying, There cometh one mightier after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose.

8 I indeed baptize you with water: but the Son of God shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

9 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized in the Jordan by John.

10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending and remaining upon him:

II And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

12 And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.

13 And he was in the wilderness forty days and forty nights, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild beasts; and the angels were ministering unto him.

14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom,

15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent, and believe the gospel.

16 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Šimon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

18 And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

19 And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, and they were in the ship mending their nets.

20 And straightway he called them and they left their father

Zebedee in the ship, with the hired servants, and followed him.

21 And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught them.

22 And they were astonished at his teaching; for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,

24 Saying, What have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, thou art the Holy One of God.

25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, it came out of him.

27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new teaching is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

28 And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

29 And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into a house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

30 But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever; and immediately they tell him of her.

31 And he came and lifted her up; and as soon as he took her by the

hand, the fever immediately left her, and she ministered unto them.

32 And at even, when the sun had set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that had devils.

33 And all the city was gathered together at the door.

34 And the Lord Jesus healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils, but suffered them not to speak, because they knew him.

35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.

36 And Simon and they that were with him followed after him.

37 And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.

38 And Jesus said unto them, Let us go into the next villages and towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.

39 And he preached in their synagogues and throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.

40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down he said unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

41 And Jesus had compassion on him, and put forth his hand, and touched him, and said unto him, I will; be thou clean.

42 And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.

43 And he strictly commanded him, and forthwith sent him away, 44 And said unto him, See thou

say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the chief priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

45 But he went out, and began to publish and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but could only be without in desert places. And they were coming to him from every quarter.

II1 And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was heard that he was in the house.

2 And many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.

3 And they came, bringing unto him one sick of the palsy, who was carried by four men.

4 And when they could not bring him unto him for the multitude, they uncovered the roof where Jesus was: and after they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.

5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins are forgiven thee.

6 But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, saying,

7 This man speaketh blasphemy. Who can forgive sins but God only?

8 And Jesus immediately perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, and he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?

9 Which is easier, to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?

10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)

II I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.

12 And immediately he arose, and took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.

13 And he went forth again to the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.

14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphæus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.

15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat at meat together with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many that followed him.

16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, Why doth your master eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick. For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.
