who, while glittering in the applause of the world, are odious in the sight of the holy, heart-searching God! How anxiously should it lead all who would approve themselves before him, to inspect, "with a godly jealousy," the principles by which they are actuated, that they may now be accepted, and that hereafter they may not be reminded by the condemning Judge, "Ye did it not to me." But while it must be the first care to see that the motive be right, even a sincere desire to glorify God, it must be remembered, that God cannot be glorified by the good works of his servants, unless they be openly performed. This shews the absolute necessity of their making a visible profession of religion, and a distinct avowal of the principles on which they act. For their holy life is required to be like "light;" it must "shine;" and "so shine," that men may see their good works, and that, viewing them in connexion with the professed principles of God's faithful servants, they may be constrained to "glorify their Father who is in heaven." Such was the happy result of the holy lives and bold avowal of their principles, of the first christian disciples at Jerusa

lem; of whom it is said, that they had "favour with all the people."

Now, it should be seriously considered by every devout young person, that, in however great a degree he may, by the purity and amiableness of his conduct, conciliate the esteem of the people of the world, God will not be glorified unless he avow distinctly the great principles drawn from the gospel, by which he is influenced. For, unless he do, while they admire and commend his good works, they will attribute them to the same low, selfish, and corrupt principles by which themselves are actuated; and God will not be honoured. An open avowal of attachment to God and to evangelical truth, in connexion with consistency of conduct and meekness of demeanour, is most lovely in youth. And it is attended, too, with immense advantages; for it procures the friendship of the good, who delight to encourage and foster early piety, to watch over it with assiduous care, to warn of danger, to advise, and, if need be, to reprove.

Thus guarded, and strengthened, and encouraged, the youthful professor proceeds

onward in the path of safety and peace; and, while he thankfully receives the help and counsel of the experienced, he looks habitually to God for directing, upholding, and sanctifying grace; still increasing in wisdom, and in the image of his Saviour, and in favour with God and man.
