Selections from Various Authors,

AND INTENDED

FOR THE USE OF INTERMEDIATE CLASSES IN

SUNDAY-SCHOOLS.

PUBLISHED BY

THE SUNDAY-SCHOOL ASSOCIATION.

Oh! say not, dream not, heavenly notes

To childish ears are vain,

That the young mind at random floats,
And cannot reach the strain.

Dim or unheard the words may fall,

And yet the heaven-taught mind

May learn the sacred air, and all

The harmony unwind.

PREFACE.

THE SUNDAY-SCHOOL READER is intended to be used as an intermediate Class-book between the Third Book for Sunday-Schools and The Sunday Reading Book, published by the Sunday-School Association.

The plan pursued in this work has been to illustrate each prose lesson by a piece of poetry, suitable for committing to memory, or for being used as a dictation exercise.

It is suggested, that the texts at the foot of each lesson, chosen with reference to the subject, be learnt by the pupils during the week, to aid in keeping the subject of their previous lesson clearly in their minds, in order that they may be questioned upon it the following Sunday.

With an earnest wish that it may be found useful and interesting, both to teachers and taught, this little work has been prepared.
