PSALM CXLVIII. (Second Version.) 8-7.
PRAISE the LORD! ye heavens adore Him!
Praise Him, angels, in the height!
Sun and moon rejoice before Him!
Praise Him all ye stars and light!
Praise the LORD! for He hath spoken;
Worlds His mighty voice obeyed;
Laws, which never shall be broken,
For their guidance He hath made.
Praise the LORD! for He is glorious;
Never shall His promise fail;

GOD hath made His saints victorious;
Sin and death shall not prevail.
Praise the GOD of our salvation!
Hosts on high His power proclaim;
Heaven, and earth, and all creation,
Laud and magnify His Name.

[blocks in formation]

O PRAISE ye the LORD! prepare your glad voice,
His praise in the great assembly to sing
In our Great Creator let Israel rejoice,

And children of Sion be glad in their king.
Let them His great Name extol in the dance,
With timbrel and harp His praises express;
Who always takes pleasure His saints to advance,
And with His salvation the humble to bless.

With glory adorned, His people shall sing

To GOD, Who their heads with safety doth shield: Such honour and triumph His favour shall bring; O, therefore, for ever, all praise to Him yield.

By angels in heaven, of every degree,

And saints upon earth, all praise be addrest
To GOD in Three Persons-One GOD ever blest-
As it has been, now is, and ever shall be.

O PRAISE the LORD in that blest place,
From whence His Goodness largely flows;
Praise Him in Heaven, where He His Face,
Unveiled, in perfect Glory shows.

Praise Him for all the mighty acts,
Which He in our behalf hath done;
His kindness this return exacts,

With which our praise should equal run.

Let all, that vital breath enjoy,

The breath He doth to them afford,
In just returns of praise employ;
Let every creature praise the LORD.

MORNING HYMNS.

HYMN I.

L. M.

AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise
To pay Thy morning sacrifice.
Redeem thy mis-spent moments past,
And live this day as if thy last;
Thy talents to improve take care;
For the great Day thyself prepare.
Let all thy converse be sincere-
Thy conscience as the noon-day clear;
For GOD's all seeing Eye surveys
Thy secret thoughts, thy works and ways.
Glory to GOD, who safe hast kept,
And hast refreshed me, while I slept!
Grant, LORD, when I from death shall wake,
may of endless life partake.

I

HYMN II.

WAKE, and lift up thyself, my heart,
And with the angels bear thy part,
Who, all night long, unwearied, sing
High glory to th' Eternal King.
I wake, I wake, ye heavenly choir!
May your devotion me inspire,
That I, like you, my age may spend-
Like you, may on my GOD attend.

L. M.

103

May I, like you, in GOD delight,
Have all day long my GOD in sight,
Perform, like you, my Maker's will,
Like you, abhor each thought of ill.

LORD, I my vows to Thee renew;
Scatter my sins as morning-dew;

Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.

Direct, control, suggest, this day,
All I design, or do, or say,

That all my powers, with all their might,
In Thy sole glory may unite.

O keep my heart from sin secure,
My life unblameable and pure,

That, when my last of days shall come,
Fearless I may await my doom.

HYMN III.

O JESU, Lord of plenteous Grace,
Thou Brightness of Thy Father's Face,
Thou Fountain of Eternal Light,
Who scatterest all the shades of night!

Come, Holy Sun of Heavenly Love,
Shower down Thy radiance from above,
Till on our inward souls shall stream
The Comforter's enlivening beam.
All-hallowed be this new-born day!
Let meekness be our morning ray,
And faithful love our noon-day light,
And hope our sunset, calm and bright!
So, Lord, with each returning morn
Thine image to our hearts be borne,
That we may ever clearly see

The Way, the Truth, the Life, in Thee.

HYMN IV.

THE Star of Day hath risen now!
Suppliant before our GOD we bow,
That He would guide our steps aright—
Himself the uncreated Light.

O LORD, whate'er this day we do,
Let it to Thy renown accrue :
Our labours bless with Thy regard,
Their Author and their high Reward!
Far from each heart, or hand, or tongue,
Be word, or deed, or thought, of wrong!
Let simple truth our lips restrain,
And love within our bosoms reign.

So we, when night succeeds to day,
And this bright sun hath passed away,
Unspotted from the world, shall raise
To Thee, our SAVIOUR, Songs of praise.

HYMN V.

FORTH in Thy Name, O LORD, we go
Our daily labours to renew-
Thee, only Thee, resolved to know,
In all we think, or say, or do.
The task Thy Wisdom hath assigned
We would with cheerful zeal fulfil-
In all our work Thy Presence find,
And gladly do Thy holy Will.

O may we bear Thy easy yoke,

L. M.

L. M.

With patience watch, with fervour pray;
And still to things Eternal look
Through all the duties of the day.

Whate'er Thy bounteous Hand hath given,
For Thee, our GOD, we would employ ;
And, looking for our rest in heaven,
Serve Thee on earth with holy joy.
