ACKNOWLEDGMENT

To Mr. Richard T. Hargreaves, formerly principal of Central High School, Minneapolis, Minnesota, now President of the State Normal School, Cheney, Washington, I extend my thanks for the daily encouragement which he gave so generously during the writing of this book. I am indebted to him also for many hints and suggestions which have been incorporated in this text.

I am under deep obligation to Miss Abigail O'Leary, teacher of English, Central High School, Minneapolis, who used this book in her classes while it was in manuscript form. Her enthusiasm helped greatly in the completion of the book.

I am indebted to both Mr. Hargreaves and the editor of The Quest, the literary magazine of Central High School, for permisson to reprint so liberally.

The Board of Education of Minneapolis permitted me to reprint the list of plays in Chapter V from The Reading List for Junior and Senior High Schools, compiled under the chairmanship of Miss Bridget Hayes, John Marshall High School.

To Miss Bertha Fergusen, Roosevelt High School, Minneapolis, I owe the extract from the diary of a social worker; and to Mr. LeRoy Nielson, the brief in Chapter VII.

To Miss Margaret Greer, librarian at Central High School, Minneapolis, I owe the Mastery Test XXI, on the use of the dictionary, on page 497.

My thanks are due to the publishers of the Saturday Evening Post for permission to reprint the pictures inserted between pages 162 and 163.

The following publishing companies allowed me to reprint the poems which appear in Chapter III, and the letters in Chapter VIII:

The Macmillan Company: four letters reprinted from Letters from Many Pens, edited by Margaret Coult: Charles Lamb
