seek him;" "* and should a believer be asked "what is thy beloved more than another beloved ?"† can he not with confidence and triumph point to him, to whom all the above names appertain, and say, "this is my beloved, and this is my friend." How insignificant and contemptible are all the titles that belong to man, compared with those which belong to our Redeemer; and, O who can estimate the folly, the guilt, and the danger, of those who are ashamed of Him, who has on his head many crowns, and on his vesture, and on his thigh, a name written, King of Kings, and Lord of Lords ;"§ and what shall we say of those who prefer the friendship and the esteem of man, who "at his best state is altogether vanity," to the friendship and the esteem of him, in "whose favour is life, and whose loving-kindness is better than life,"¶ and who is exalted "far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come,' ""** or what shall we say of those who dread the frown of man, "whose breath is in his nostrils, who shall die and be as grass,"tt rather than "fear him who liveth for ever and ever, and who has the keys of hell and of death."
