INTRODUCTORY. F all the men and women who have lived upon the earth, none fill a wider space in our thoughts and imaginations, or seem to have enjoyed greater facilities for learning what was true and doing what was right, than those who were personally intimate with our Lord Jesus Christ, when "the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us" (John i. 14). To have heard the teachings of Him who spake as never man spake (John vii. 46),-to have witnessed His mighty works of love and wisdom, and watched the face through which shone, in every expression, the fulness of Divine benignity and pity, may well appear the topmost height of human privilege and opportunity. Indeed, it is easy to exaggerate the advantages of such personal acquaintance. For we know that the actual companions of our Saviour were by no means free from the common infirmities of our nature; and that, even as regarded the character and mission of their Master, on whom they continually attended, they shared many of the erroneous ideas which mingled with all Jewish expectations of the Messiah. Before their minds floated the illusion of an earthly conqueror, who should shake off the foreign bondage of the race of Abraham, and once again establish their temporal supremacy. Notwithstanding our Lord's emphatic and repeated teaching that the kingdom of God cometh not with observation, but is an engrafting of heavenly principles within the soul (Luke xvii. 20, 21); that the flesh profiteth nothing, and the spirit alone quickeneth (John vi. 63); that the Son of Man, according to prophecy (Isa. liii. 3), was despised and rejected, and would at length be crucified and slain (Matt. xx. 18, 19), they persisted in their dreams of earthly empire, and even strove in unseemly contention as to which of them should be the greatest in it (Luke xxii. 24), and fill the seats nearest to the throne (Matt. xx. 21). Having heard His express declaration, "My kingdom is not of this world" (John xviii. 36), even after He had died out of the world, and had risen from the sepulchre in His glorified Humanity, they wasted the very moments preceding His ascension in the vain inquiry, "Lord, wilt Thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?" (Acts i. 6). 66 Thus personal intimacy with the manifested God gave no immunity from the ordinary frailties of our nature; nor was it any safeguard against the grossest misconceptions of His character and providence. However great, therefore, may have been the privilege of dwelling with the Saviour when He walked the paths of Palestine |
