shall be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are they that are persecuted for righteousness' sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and say every evil thing against you for my sake, speaking falsely.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad for great is your reward in heaven for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.

22 Blessed are

ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from them, and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. 23 Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy; for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for thus did their fathers unto the

prophets. 24 But woe for you that are rich! for ye are receiv ing your consolation. 25 Woe for you that are filled! for ye shall hunger. Woe for you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. 26 Woe for you, when men speak well of you! for thus did their fathers to the false prophets.

21❝Ye have heard from them (Note p. 63) that it was said to those of old time, 'Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be

liable to the judgment: * 22 but I say unto you, Every one who is angry with his brother without a cause shall be liable to the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, 'Raca!' vain empty fellow, shall be liable to the council: and whosoever shall say, 'More!' vile worthless wretch, shall be liable to hell fire. 23 If therefore thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remember that thy brother hath any complaint against thee; 24 leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first obtain reconciliation with thy διαλλαγηθε brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

The passage refers to the three gradations of punishment among the Jews: such as were inflicted by the Court of seven Judges, ǹ кpio, established in every city; the severer punishments, such as excommunication, inflicted by the Sanhedrim, To σvvedptov; and capital punishments, after which the bodies of criminals were burned in the valley of Hinnom, ή γεεννα του πυρος. adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. 26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

27 "Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery:' 28 but I say I unto you, Every one who looketh

on a woman so as to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 Now if thy right eye is leading thee to sin,* pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and that thy whole body should not be cast into hell. 30 And if thy right hand is leading thee to sin, cut it off, and cast it from thee for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and that thy whole body should not be cast into hell.

31 "Now it was said, 'Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: 32 but I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that hath been put away, committeth adultery.

• We have no single word to express the import of okavdaliw, which is peculiar to ecclesiastical Greek. It denotes to cause to fall, either from duty or from allegiance. The noun okavdaλov denotes the cause of sin or of desertion,—a stumbling-block. The verb is found (see Schmidt) in Matt. v. 29, 30. xi. 6. xiii. 21, 57. xv. 12. xvii. 27. xviii. 6, 8, 9. xxiv. 10. xxvi. 31, 33. Mark iv. 17. vi. 3. ix. 42, 48, 45, 47. xiv. 27, 29. Luke vii. 23. xvii. 2. John vi. 61. xvi. 1.-Ekavdaλov, is found in Matt. xiii. 41. xvi. 23. xviii. 7 (three times). Luke xvii. 1.

time, 'Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths;' 34 but I say unto you, Swear not at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God; 35 nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

38 Ye have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth :' 39 but I say unto you, Resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if any one desires to sue thee at law, and to take away thy vest, let him have thy mantle also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that desireth to borrow from thee turn not thou away.

43 Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy:' 44 but I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 that ye may be sons of your Father who is in heaven: for he maketh

I understand our Lord, in this and the corresponding verses, from the 21st, to refer to the system of the Scribes and Pharisees. They either cited the precepts of Moses, and restrained or perverted the application of them; or, they added, from their traditions, such as rendered the spirit of the Law of none effect. This view somewhat modifies the rendering.

CH. VI. "Take heed that ye do not your acts of righteous- δικαιοσυness before men, in order to be seen by them; for otherwise ye have no reward with your Father who is in heaven. 2 When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be glorified by men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth that thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret shall himself reward thee openly.

32 And if ye love them that love you, what thanks have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. 33 And if ye do good to them that do good to you, what thanks have ye? for sinners also do the same. 34 And if ye lend to those from whom ye hope to receive again, what thanks have ye for sinners also lend to sinners, that they may receive as much again. 35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Most High: for he is kind unto the unthankful and evil. 36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
