4 As the morning light returns,
As the sun with splendour burns,
my Teach us still to turn to Thee,
Ever-Blessed Trinity,

cres With our hands our hearts to raise,
In unfailing prayer and praise. Amen.

Ps.

The day is Thine, and the night is Thine; Thou
hast prepared the light and the sun.
lxxiv. 17.

My God, I praise Thee for the light return-
ing,
With joyful gratitude Thy love discerning;
Thou sendest sleep in mercy to restore me,
I now adore Thee.

2 m The night is Thine, Thy Presence did not leave me,

Р

For in my weariness Thou didst receive

me;

To Thee I consecrate this life awaking,

Myself forsaking.

His compassions fail not. They are new every morning. L.M.
Lam. iii, 22, 23.

1 NEW every morning is the love

Our wakening and uprising prove;

Through sleep and darkness safely brought, Restored to life, and power, and thought. 2 m New mercies, each returning day, Hover around us while we pray ; New perils past, new sins forgiven, New thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.

cres

3 mf If on our daily course our mind
Be set to hallow all we find,

New treasures still of countless price,
God will provide for sacrifice.

4 mƒ Old friends, old scenes, will lovelier be,
As more of heaven in each we see;
dim Some softening gleam of love and prayer
Shall dawn on every cross and care.

5 my The trivial round, the common task,
Will furnish all we need to ask,
Room to deny ourselves, a road
To bring us daily nearer God,

6

» Only, O Lord, in Thy dear love,
Fit us for perfect rest above;
And help us, this and every day,
To live more nearly as we pray.

Amen.

J. Keble (1792-1866).

White in the Blood of the Lamb. Rev. vii. 14. C.M.

1 my Now morning lifts her dewy veil, With new-born blessings crowned: cres Oh! haste we then her light to hail In courts of holy ground.

2 But Christ, triumphant o'er the grave,
Shines more divinely bright:

Oh! sing we then His power to save,
And walk we in His light.

3 When from the swaddling bands of shade
Sprang forth the world so fair,
In robes of brilliancy arrayed,
What power divine was there!

4 mf When He, Who gave His guiltless Son
A guilty world to spare,

cres Restored to life the Holy One,

f What love divine was there!

5 and When fresh from the Creator's Hand,
The earth in beauty stood,

All decked with light at His command
He saw, and called it good.

6 But still more lovely in His sight
The Church now stands renewed,

Since He, the Lamb, hath made it white dim In His atoning Blood.

7

Oh, Holy, Blessed Three in One,
May Thy pure light be given,

cres That we the paths of death may shun,
And keep the way to heaven.

Amen.

Paris Breviary (1736), tr. J. Chandler (1806–1876).

Early in the morning will I direct my prayer unto L.M.

Thee. Ps. v. 3.

1 Now that the daylight fills the sky, We lift our hearts to God on high;

dim That He, in all we do or say,

mf Would keep us free from harm to-day ;2 mf Would guard our tongue in every word, Lest sounds of angry strife be heard; From all ill sights would turn our eyes, And close our ears from vanities ;

3 mf Would keep our inmost conscience

pure;

Our souls from folly would secure ;
Would bid us check the pride of sense
With due and holy abstinence.

4 mf So we when this new day is gone,
dim And night in turn is drawing on,
cres With conscience by the world un-
stained,

Shall praise His Name for victory
gained.

5 All praise to God the Father be;
All praise, Eternal Son, to Thee;
All praise for ever, as is meet,
To God the Holy 'Paraclete.' Amen.
