All good gifts around us
Are sent from heaven above,
Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord,
For all His love.

4 mf Our souls, Blest Saviour, gather—
Wheat for the golden floor,
Where angels shall be reapers,
And saints the harvest store :
cres There glad, and safe, and glorious,
While endless ages run,
The first-fruits of creation

Shall hymn the great Three-One.
All Thy works shall praise Thee
In earth, and sea, and sky;

Thy saints make known, around Thy throne,
Thy Majesty! Amen.

Matthias Claudius (1740–1815); tr. Miss J. M. Campbell (1861);
last verse, H. Downton.

Also the following:

O Lord of heaven, and earth, and sea

Praise to God, immortal praise.

Times of Scarcity.

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither
shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the
olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no
meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold,
and there shall be no herd in the stalls: yet I
will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God
of my salvation. Hab. iii. 17, 18.

1 my THOU that sendest sun and rain,
Ruling over land and sea,

May we ne'er of Thee complain,
Whatsoe'er our lot may be.

7s.

2 m Whether sun or rain in turn
Ripen or destroy the grain,
May we still this lesson learn,
Ne'er to murmur or complain.

3 p Fewer flocks, or fewer herds,

Scanty though our store may be, cres Still we seem to hear Thy words, 'Trust, ye faithful, trust in Me.' 4 mf All we have, we know, is Thine, Thine to give and take away; Feed us then with food divine, Feed us this and every day.

5 m Thus as changeful seasons bring Wealth or want, whiche'er it be; cres Uncomplaining still we'll sing, Simply trusting all to Thee.

Amen.

Godfrey Thring.

Thanksgiving.

So when they cried unto the Lord in their trouble,
He delivered them out of their distress
O that men would therefore praise the Lord for
His goodness, and declare the wonders that He
doeth for the children of men. Ps. cvii. 13,

15.

1 GOD, the Lord, has heard our prayer;
God has lightened all our care;
To His glorious throne on high
Rose His children's mournful cry ;
Hallelujah! praises sing

To our Father and our King.

7s.

2 mf Helpless, Lord, Thy Face we sought,
cres Thou hast our deliverance wrought;
God, Who gave us faith to pray,
Give us thankful hearts to-day.
Hallelujah! Lord, to Thee
Sing we, though unworthily.

3 Now the night of grief is past,
Morn with joy breaks forth at last;
Trust in God if ye would prove

All the riches of His love.
Hallelujah! praise the Lord :

Trust His love, and plead His word.
4 Praise to God, Who heard our cry;
Praise to Christ, Who pleads on high;
Praise the Spirit Blest, Who gave
Strength our Father's help to crave;
Hallelujah! glory be

To the Eternal Trinity.

Amen.

H. H. Wyatt (1859), verse 3, ll. 1, 2, alt. Also the following:

Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go
forward. Exod. xiv. 15.

1 FORWARD! be our watchword,

f

Steps and voices joined ;
Seek the things before us,
Not a look behind;
Burns the fiery pillar

At our army's head;

Who shall dream of shrinking,
By our Captain led?
Forward through the desert,
Through the toil and flight;
Jordan flows before us,
Sion beams with light.

2 ƒ Forward, when in childhood

Buds the infant mind;

All through youth and manhood,
Not a thought behind;
Speed through realms of nature,
Climb the steps of grace;

Faint not, till in glory

Gleams our Father's Face.
Forward, all the life-time,

6.5.

Climb from neight to height:
Till the head be hoary,
Till the eve be light.

3 Forward, flock of Jesus,
Salt of all the earth,

Till each yearning purpose
Spring to glorious birth;

p Sick, they ask for healing,
Blind, they grope for day;

cres

Pour upon

the nations

Wisdom's loving ray.
Forward, out of error,

Leave behind the night;
Forward through the darkness,
Forward into light.

4 Glories upon glories

Hath our God prepared,
By the souls that love Him
One day to be shared ;
Eye hath not beheld them,
Ear hath never heard;
Nor of these hath uttered
Thought or speech a word;
Forward, marching eastward
Where the heaven is bright,
Till the veil be lifted,
Till our faith be sight.

5

Far o'er

yon horizon

Rise the city towers,

Where our God abideth,

That fair home is ours:
Flash the streets with jasper,
Shine the gates with gold:
Flows the gladdening river
Shedding joys untold.

Thither, onward thither,
In the Spirit's might;
Pilgrims to your country,
Forward into light.

6 Into God's high temple

Onward as we press,
