Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was
neighbour unto him that fell among the
thieves? And he said, He that shewed
mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto
him, Go, and do thou likewise. Luke x.
36, 37.

1 m O GOD of mercy, God of might,
dim In love and pity infinite,

2

cres Teach us, as ever in Thy sight,

[blocks in formation]

8.9.8.6.

Р And Thou, Who cam'st on earth to die, cres That fallen man might live thereby, dim O hear us, for to Thee we cry,

cres

In hope, O Lord, to Thee.

3 mf Teach us the lesson Thou hast taught,
To feel for those Thy Blood hath bought,
That every word, and deed, and thought
May work a work for Thee.

4 For all are brethren, far and wide,
Since Thou, O Lord, for all hast died :-
Then teach us, whatsoe'er betide,
To love them all in Thee.

5

p In sickness, sorrow, want, or care, Whate'er it be, 'tis ours to share ; cres May we, where help is needed, there Give help as unto Thee.

f

6 mf And may Thy Holy Spirit move

All those who live, to live in love, cres Till Thou shalt greet in heaven above All those who give to Thee.

f

Amen.

Godfrey Thring.

Freely ye have received, freely give.

Matt. x. 8.

8.8.8.4.

10 LORD of heaven, and earth, and sea,
To Thee all praise and glory be;
How shall we show our love to Thee,
Who givest all?

2 m The golden sunshine, vernal air,
Sweet flowers and fruits Thy love declare,
cres Where harvests ripen, Thou art there,
Who givest all !

3

P For peaceful homes, and healthful days,
cres For all the blessings earth displays,
We owe Thee thankfulness and praise,
Who givest all!

f

p Thou didst not spare Thine only Son, But gav'st Him for a world undone, cres And freely with that Blessed One Thou givest all.

f

5 m Thou giv'st the Holy Spirit's dower,
Spirit of life, and love, and power,
And dost His sevenfold graces shower
Upon us all.

6 cres For souls redeemed, for sins forgiven,
For means of grace and hopes of heaven,
dim Father, what can to Thee be given,
Who givest all ?

Р

7 mf We lose what on ourselves we spend, cres We have as treasure without end Whatever, Lord, to Thee we lend, Who givest all.

=

8 mf Whatever, Lord, we lend to Thee
Repaid a thousandfold will be;
Then gladly will we give to Thee,
Who givest all;—

9 To Thee, from Whom we all derive
Our life, our gifts, our power to give;
O may we ever with Thee live,
Who givest all!
Amen.

Bishop Chr. Wordsworth.

Holy Baptism.

In the Name of the Father, and of
the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
Matt. xxviii. 19.

1 mf FATHER of heaven, Who hast created all, And rulest all,—(p) we pray,

cres

f

Look on this child, who at Thy gracious call
Now enters in life's way!

Oh, make it Thine, Thy blessing give,
That to Thy glory it may live,

Father of heaven!

2 m O Son of God, Atoning Lord, behold, We bring this child to Thee;

p

cres

Take it, O loving Shepherd, to Thy fold,
For ever Thine to be:

Defend it through this earthly strife,
And lead it in the path of life,

O Son of God!

3 mf O Holy Ghost, Who broodedst o'er the wave, Descend upon this child;

dim

cres Give it undying life, its spirit lave With waters undefiled;

And make it evermore to be

An heir of bliss, a shrine for Thee,
O Holy Ghost!

4 0 Triune God, lo, at Thy word 'tis done;
We speak, but Thine the might;

mf This child hath scarce yet seen our earthly

cres

sun,

Yet pour on it Thy light

Of faith, and hope, and joyful love,
Thou Sun of all below, above,

O Triune God. Amen.

A good soldier of Jesus

Christ. 2 Tim. ii. 3.

8.7.8.7.7.7.7.7.8.8.

1 IN the Name of God the Father,

mf

dim

In the Name of God the Son,
With the Ever-living Spirit,
The Eternal Three in One,
Child of man, and born in sin,

Knocking at the gates of heaven,
Seeking grace to enter in,

Grace through Christ to be forgiven; cres We tread the path our fathers trod, And seal thee here a child of God.

2 mf

cres

Washed beneath the mystic waters,

May thy soul rise pure and bright,
Cleansed by God's Eternal Spirit,
Clothed in robes of heavenly light,

;

Free to tread where Christ hath trod,
From the guilt of Adam free
Born,-but now reborn of God,
Child of Christian liberty,

We stamp the cross upon thy brow,
The cross, a sign of freedom now.

3 Christ hath claimed thee for His
soldier,-

Taking then the shield of faith,
Fight beneath His glorious banner,
Fight 'gainst Satan to the death
Fear no foeman in the field,
'Forward' be thy battle-cry,
Safe beneath that wondrous shield,
Till the final victory

Shall place the crown upon the brow
That bears the cross so bravely now.

;

Amen.

Godfrey Thring.

This is the token of the covenant. Gen. ix. 12. C.M.

1

mf IN token that thou shalt not fear
Christ crucified to own,

We print the cross upon thee here,
And stamp thee His alone.

2 mf In token that thou shalt not blush
To glory in His Name,

We blazon here upon thy front
His glory and His shame.

3 ƒ In token that thou shalt not flinch
Christ's conflict to maintain,

But 'neath His banner manfully
Firm at thy post remain ;—
