QUESTIONS FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT.

LESSON I.

Question. Tell me, children, who created the world in which we live ?

Answer. God.

Q. What are we told that He created on the first day? A. Light.

Q. On the second day?

A. Air and clouds.

Q. What on the third day?

A. Earth and sea, and the things that grow.

A. Beasts, creeping things, and man.

Q. Did God make all things good?

A. "God saw everything that He had made, and behold it was very good."

Q. What are we told about the seventh day?

A. "God rested the seventh day from all His works which He had made."

Q. What were the names of the first man and woman? A. Adam and Eve.

Q. Where did God place them?

A. In the garden of Eden, or Paradise.

Q. You told me that God made all things good,— did Adam and Eve continue good?

A. No; they disobeyed God's command.

Q. Tell me what it was?

A. "The Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."

Q. Did they eat of this tree?

A. They did: the devil in the form of a serpent, tempted them, and they did eat.

Q. How were they punished?

A. They were driven from the garden, and became subject to sickness, sorrow, and death.

Q. Did God leave them without hope?

A. No; He promised them a Saviour.

Q. What were the names of the two eldest sons of Adam and Eve ?

Q. What was Abel?

A. A keeper of sheep.

Q. What wicked crime did Cain commit ?

A. He killed his brother Abel.

Q. Are not the angry thoughts that rise in our hearts-though they may not lead to murder-hateful in God's sight?

A. Yes.

Q. What should little children do to prevent them? A. We should seek help from God, and earnestly pray. "Set a watch, O Lord, before the door of my lips, that I offend not with my tongue."

LESSON II.

Q. When man began to multiply on the earth, what did God see?

A. "God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Q. What did the Lord say?

A. "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and creeping thing, and the fowls of the air."

Q. Who found grace in the sight of the Lord?

A. Noah. "He was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God?"

Q. What were the names of his three sons?
A. Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Q. What did God tell Noah to make?
A. An Ark.

Q. What is an Ark?

A. A kind of ship.

Q. How long was Noah in building it?
A. One hundred and twenty years.

Q. How many persons went into the Ark?
A. Eight.

Q. Who were they?

A. Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives. Q. What else did God command Noah to take into the Ark ?

A. "Of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female."

Q. What age was Noah when the flood of waters was upon the earth?

A. Six hundred years old.

Q. How long did it rain?

A. Forty days and forty nights.

On what mountain did the ark rest?
A. On Ararat.

Q. What did Noah send forth from the Ark?
A. A dove.

Q. Did it return?

A. Yes; "she found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark."

Q. Did the dove return when Noah sent it out the second time?

A. Yes; "the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf plucked off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth."

Q. How many days passed before Noah sent the dove a third time?

A. Seven; and it returned again unto him no more. Q. When Noah left the ark, what was the first thing he did?

A. He built an altar unto the Lord.

Q. Was God pleased with this?

A. Yes; "And the Lord said, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every living thing as I have done. While the earth remaineth, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease."

Q. What did God set in the clouds as a token that He would remember His promise?

A. The rainbow.
