EXHIBITS EXHIBIT I-CHECKLIST OF COMMUNIST PARTY POSITIONS IN THE SINO-SOVIET DISPUTE, AS OF JANUARY 19651 EXPLANATION OF TABLES The column showing Communist Party membership gives a single figure for each country. Where more than one Communist Party exists, the number of parties whose membership is added into the total appears to the right of the parentheses. Within the parentheses-(E) or (C)-indicate whether the membership figure is an estimated or claimed total. Under "Sino-Soviet dispute" each party is characterized according to the estimate of whether it adheres to the positions of Moscow or Peiping. Those entries which read "Pro-Soviet" or "Pro-Chinese" refer to positions taken by the current leadership and do not mean that there are no dissident factions. "Open split" means that there are two parties-one pro-Soviet and one proChinese. The term "internal factions" describes parties which have extreme factional problems related to the Sino-Soviet dispute, but the majority of the leaders and members in all parties except the Japanese Communist Party is pro-Soviet. 1 Furnished by the Department of State in advance of its publication in more complete form in the 17th Annual Report on World Strength of the Communist Party Organizations. 1 East Berlin is included with East Germany; West Berlin is given separate treatment from West Ger many.
