PREFACE.

THE vital importance of the investigation of truth, and the exposure of error on religious subjects, might be pleaded as a sufficient reason for adding another to the many publications on CALVINISM, though the Author may be pardonably allowed to hope, that in novelty of plan, and originality of execution, the present possesses some peculiar claims to public regard. The general title of CALVINISM has been prefixed to the work, although the Author would be understood, in his strictures, to refer to the ancient as well as the modern scheme; since, after much reflection, and a diligent perusal of the most celebrated works written in defence of "moderate Calvinism," he confesses himself unable to perceive any essential difference between its fundamental principles and those of unmixed PREDESTINARIANISM; and he must, notwithstanding his unfeigned respect for
