STUDY AND STORY NATURE READERS EARTH AND SKY NUMBER III BY J. H. STICKNEY AUTHOR OF "BIRD WORLD," PETS AND COMPANIONS" KD 325 67 HARYARD UNIVERSITY LIBRARY 0764176. ENTERED AT STATIONERS' HALL COPYRIGHT, 1904 BY GINN & COMPANY ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 54-7 The Athenæum Press GINN & COMPANY CAMBRIDGE MASSACHUSETTS PREFACE In the preparation of this third number of "Earth and Sky" the author has endeavored to preserve the unity of the series, and also to keep pace with the growing intelligence of its readers. As indicated by the title, the range is wide. The object has been to call attention to the panorama of nature in its salient features in such way as to make natural occasion for oral teaching. Intimacy with nature, which comes to country children naturally, must be to an extent a thing of effort and convention to those of the town. It is believed that the following simple lessons go to the heart of the things whereof they treat in such way as to awaken living interest and lead to reflection which will go on after the lessons themselves are forgotten. Number Two specified things of earth and sky which, in the nature of the case, must be received as 'gifts" by every newcomer upon earth, and used for necessity or convenience. While not exhaustive, these gifts were suggestive of a wide range. |
