(INDEPENDENT AUDITORS) OPENING REMARKS OF CHAIRMAN JULIAN DIXON Chairman JULIAN DIXON. The Committee will come to order. I want to welcome the leadership of the District of Columbia government here this morning. As you are all aware, I am a new Chairman of this committee and also a new member of this committee. I am particularly appreciative of the fact that there are senior members on the subcommittee who have a longstanding history of commitment to the District of Columbia. I am looking forward to working closely with the ranking minority member, Congressman Carl Pursell of Michigan. I am very thankful that Congressman Louis Stokes has stayed on this subcommittee to give me some guidance and leadership, and for the longstanding involvement of Mr. William H. Natcher, Mr. Charles Wilson of Texas, Gunn McKay, and Eldon Rudd, who are continuing to serve on the subcommittee. I realize, Mr. Mayor, that you are faced with many problems concerning the city's financial situation, and I think if we work together-the City Council, the Mayor's Office and this committee-we will be able to resolve them. Obviously we will have to make some tough decisions this year. In doing that, I know there will be some disagreement but I hope we can work in a fashion that we will not be disagreeable in making those tough decisions. |
