FOREWORD THIS admirable book, which has been out of print for some time, is now about to be reprinted and republished. Originally, it had an extensive circulation, going through as many as five editions, and, in my opinion, the new edition deserves to be as widely welcomed as its prede cessors and to be recognized as a standard work of practical utility wherever the English language is spoken -in the home countries, the United States, and the Dominions. Canon Waters, the highly esteemed Pastor of Blackrock, has carefully revised the work and, in the lists of authorities suggested for consultation, has given the exact Question and Article of St. Thomas' Summa bearing on each point of doctrine. For this spontaneous act of appreciation on the Canon's part, enhancing as it does the value of the new edition, the Publishers desire to express their sincere gratitude through the medium of this Foreword. I think there can be no doubt about the value of Father McNamara's work. It is sound in doctrine, concise in treatment, apposite in its references, written in a grave and interesting style. Young priests and preachers and, indeed, all who need occasional help in the preparation of a sermon or an instruction, will turn with profit to its pages for wise and experienced guidance. On its first appearance, over forty years ago, every Bishop in Ireland, not to mention other dignitaries, wrote to the author applauding the work and promising to recommend it strongly to the clergy.
