BOUDAULT'S PEPSINE.

Since 1854, when Pepsine was first introduced by Messrs. Corvisart and Boudault, Boudault's Pepsine has been the only preparation which has at all times given satisfactory results.

The medals obtained by Boudault's Pepsine at the different exhibitions of 1867, 1868, 1872, and recently at the Vienna Exhibition of 1873, are unquestionable proofs of its excellence.

In order to give physicians an opportunity to judge for themselves, all Boudault's Pepsine will hereafter be accompanied by a circular giving plain directions for testing it. These tests will enable any one to satisfy himself of the superiority of Boudault's Pepsine, which is really the cheapest, since its use will not subject physicians and patients alike to disappointment.

CAUTION.-In order to guard against imitations each bottle will hereafter be sealed by a red metallic capsule, bearing the stamp of our trade mark, and secured by a band having a fac-simile of the medals, and the signature of Hottot, the manufacturer. Is sold in 1 ounce, 8 ounce, and 16 ounce bottles.

BLANCARD'S PILLS

OF UNCHANGEABLE IODIDE OF IRON.

Blancard's Pills of Iodide of Iron are so scrupulously prepared, and so well made, that none other have acquired a so well deserved favor among physicians and pharmaceutists. Each pill, containing one grain of proto-iodide of iron, is covered with finely pulverized iron, and covered with balsam of tolu. Dose, two to six pills a day. The genuine have a reactive silver seal attached to the lower part of the cork, and a green label on the wrapper, bearing the fac-simile of the signature of

A NEW AND IMPORTANT REMEDY.

HEMATOSINE,

OF TABOURIN & LEMAIRE, Chemists.

This new preparation, recently introduced in Enrope, may be truly called a PHYSIOLOGICAL REMEDY. HEMATOSINE constitutes the basis of the red globules of the blood, and is the organic substance now known, which is richest in assimilable iron.

In HEMATOSINE Iron is presented in the normal state in which it exists in the blood, and hence is is superior to other ferruginous preparations; for it enters into the circulation without undergoing any change. It is therefore received without fatigue by the most delicate and the most sensitive constitutions, which will not bear the ordinary chalybeates.

Hematosine is offered in the form of pills, and is applicable to all cases in which the use of iron is indicated. It will be found a most efficacious remedy for Anemia, Chlorosis, Leucorrhoea, Amenorrhea, Dysmenhorrea, General Debility, Slow Convalesence, &c.

E. FOUGERA & CO.'S

MEDICATED GLOBULES.

The form of Globules is by far the most convenient as well as the most elegant form for administering liquid preparations or powders of unpleasant taste or odor. The following varieties are now offered: Globules of Ether; Chloroform; Oil of Turpentine; Apiol; Phosphorated Oil, containing 1-60th grain of Phosphorus;

Phosphorated Oil, containing 1-30th grain of Phosphorus;

Tar; Venice Turpentine; Copaiba; Copaiba and Tar;
Oleo-Resin of Cubebs; Balsam of Peru;

Oil of Eucalyptus; Cod Liver Oil; Rhubarb;
Bi-carb. of Soda, Sulph. Quinia, etc.

The superiority of these Globules over other forms consists in the ease with which they are taken, and in their ready solubility and hence promptness of action.

They are put up in bottles of 100 each. For descriptive circulars and samples address,

MATHEY-CAYLUS'

GLUTEN CAPSULES

OF PURE COPAIBA,

AND OF THE FOLLOWING COMBINATIONS:

Capaiba and Cubebs; Cop. and Citrate of Iron; Cop. and Rhatany; Cop., Cubebs and Rhatany; Cop., Cubebs and Carbonate of Iron; Cop., Cubebs and Alum; Cop. and Magnesia: Cop. and Catechu; Cop. and Subnitrate of Bismuth; Cop. and Tannic

Acid; Cop. and Tar; Cop., Pepsine and Bismuth; Cubebs Pure; Cubebs

and Alum; Cubebs and Turpentine; Cubebs and Tannate of Iron;
Venice Turpentine; Norway Tar; Cop. and Sandal-Wood
Oil; Cop., Cubebs and Sandal-Wood Oil; Cop., Iron
and Sandal-Wood Oil.

Mathey-Caylus' Capsules, introduced into the United States in 1853, have achieved a decided success on account of the great care taken in their preparation, and of their universal efficacy. They present the most perfect mode for administering Copaiba, Cubebs, Tar, Turpentine, and other remedies, the disagreeable odor and taste of which are often a hindrance to their use. Being formed of a thin, transparent and readily assimilated coating, they so cover and disguise the medicine to be given that it can be taken with ease, and they offer the special advantage of never causing nausea, eructations, or dyspeptic symptoms, which are complained of by many persons using other preparations.

DOCTOR RABUTEAU'S

Dragees, Elixir, and Syrup of Proto-Chloride of Iron.

Dr. Rabuteau has proved by physiological experiments that every ferruginous preparation, in order to be absorbed and assimilated, must be first transformed in the stomach into a proto-chloride. Hence these preparations, containing iron already prepared for assimilation without the aid of the gastric juice, have been found preeminently useful in Anemia, Chlorosis, Amenorrhea, Leucorrhea, and in all cases in which ferruginous preparations are indicated. Experiments conducted in the Hospitals of Paris have given positive proof of their value. The proto-chloride is here presented in an unalterable state, each dragee and each tablespoonful containing half a grain of the pure salt.

DOCTOR CLIN'S

Dragees and Capsules of Bromide of Camphor.

Bromide of Camphor, which has been but recently introduced in this country, and principally through the agency of Dr. W. A. Hammond, possesses undoubted properties of a sedative character. It is one of the most clearly defined anti-spasmodics, and acts as a hypnotic and as a sedative of the nervous and circulatory systems. Dr. Clin's preparations have been found useful in Insomnia, Chorea, Hysteria, Paralysis Agitans, Nervous Cough, and in all cases where a sedative is indicated. Owing to the bad taste and penetrating odor of this substance, these two forms will be found very useful. Each dragee contains nearly two grains, and each capsule nearly four grains of the salt. The dragees are sold in bottles of 60 dragees; the capsules in bottles of 50 capsules.

NEW YORK.

This Extract is prepared from the best Canada Barley Malt, by an improved process which prevents injury to its properties by excess of heat. It is less than half as expensive as the foreign extract; it is also more palatable, convenient of administration, and will not ferment.

Attention is invited to the following analysis of this Extract as given by S. H. Douglas, Professor of Chemistry, UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, Ann Arbor.

TROMMER EXTRACT OF MALT CO.:-I inclose herewith my analysis of your EXTRACT OF MALT:

Malt Sugar (Glucose), 46.1; Dextrine, Hop-Bitter, Extractive Matter, 23.6; Albuminous Matter (Diastase), 2.469; Ash-Phosphates, 1.712; Alkalies, .377; Water, 25.7. Total, 99.958.

In comparing the above analysis with that of the Extract of Malt of the GERMAN PHARMACOPEA, as given by Hager, that has been so generally received by the profession, I find it to substantially agree with that article. Yours truly,

SILAS H. DOUGLAS, Prof. of Analytical and Applied Chemistry.

This invaluable preparation is highly recommended by the medical profession, as a most effective therapeutic agent for the restoration of delicate and exhausted constitutions. It is very nutritious, being rich in both muscle and fat-producing materials.

By many American physicians, and among others, by such foreign authorities (German, French, and English) as Niemeyer, Trousseau, and Aitken, the Malt Extract is extolled in the treatment of impaired, difficult, and "irritable" digestion, loss of appetite, sick headache, chronic diarrhoea, cough, bronchitis, asthma, consumption, the debility of females, and of the aged, in retarded convalescence from exhausting diseases, and indeed most all depressing maladies, in which it has been found very sustaining and strengthening, and admirably adapted for building up and invigorating the system. It is often well borne by the stomach when every kind of food is rejected, thus actually sustaining life. The presence of a large proportion of Diastase renders it most effective in those forms of disease originating in imperfect digestion of the starchy elements of food.

A single dose of the Improved Trommer's Extract of Malt contains a larger quantity of the active properties of malt than a pint of the best ale or porter; and not having undergone fermentation, is absolutely free from alcohol and carbonic ac.d.

The dose for adults is from a dessert to a tablespoonful three times daily. It is best taken after meals, pure, mixed with a glass of milk, or in water, wine, or any kind of spirituous liquor. Each bottle contains ONE AND ONE HALF POUNDS of the Extract. Price $1.00.

In addition to the Extract of Malt with Hops, the attention of physicians is invited to the following combinations:

Improved Trommer's Extract of Malt-"FERRATED."- Each dose contains four grains of the Pyrophosphate of Iron. - Particularly adapted to cases of anæmia. Price $1.00. Improved Trommer's Extract of Malt-"with CITRATE OF IRON AND QUINIA.” — Appropriate where Iron and Quinine are jointly indicated. Very beneficial in the anæmic state following autumnal fevers, in chlorosis, enlarged spleen, carbuncles, boils, etc. It is a pleasant tonic, the bitter taste being very effectually disguised. Each dose contains four grains of the Citrate of Iron and Quinia. Price $1.50.

Improved Trommer's Extract of Malt "with HYPOPHOSPHITES.” — Far superior to any of the "Syrups" of Hypophosphites, and invaluable in anæmia, scrofulous, tubercu lous, and other cachectic conditions. In the various affections to which scrofulous children are liable, as marasmus, rachitis, caries of the spine, etc., it is very efficacious. This combination is, in certain cases, even more efficient in exhaustion from undue lactation, than the Extract of Malt with hops. Price $1.50.

Improved Trommer's Extract of Malt-"with the IODIDES OF IRON AND MANGANESE."- The experience of the late Sir J. Y. Simpson and others in the use of this combination of salts, has been fully confirmed by more recent experience. Particularly recommended in anæmia dependent upon scrofula, phthisis, cancers, the syphilitic cachexy, enlarged spleen, and in chlorosis where Iron alone has failed. Each dose contains one grain each of the Iodides of Iron and Manganese. Price $1.50.

Improved Trommer's Extract of Malt "with ALTERATIVES.". Each dose contains the proper proportions of the Iodide of Calcium and Iron, and of the Chlorides and Bromides of Magnesium, Sodium, and Potassium. This combination of the most potent alteratives with tonics and restoratives, has been successfully employed in the different forms of disease dependent upon the "modified scrofulous diathesis" as general perverted glandular action, disease of the bones and cartilages, catarrhal affections of the eye, ear, and naso-pharyngeal mucous surfaces, eczematous and other cutaneous eruptions, in rheumatic arthritis, scrofulous rheumatism, etc. Price $1.50.

H. PLANTEN & SON,

It is very well known that CHLOROSIS is characterized by MEDICINAL CAPSULES,

an impoverishment of the blood, as well as by an absolute loss of the appetite, a disgust for food, and a sluggish and painful digestion. The illustrious Trousseau declares that "tar undoubtedly stimulates the appetite." The combination, therefore, of tar and iron is particularly indicated in the treatment of chlorosis.

Tar checks the bronchial mucous and muco-purulent secretion more readily and mildly than other agents of the balsamic order; it is this which has rendered its use so universal in bronchial catarrh and in all the forms of chronic inflamation of the bronchi. But this catarrh, which hinders the ready entrance of the air to the lungs, likewise obstructs respiration and diminishes the reparation power of the blood by lessening its richness. It thus becomes necessary to resort to iron to repair the waste caused by the free mucous secretion and the consequent imperfect oxygenation of the blood.

In catarrh of the bladder, with or without ulcerations, in diseases of the prostate, in cases attended with chronic uterine discharge (leucorrhoea), the patients often become so debilitated that their pale and exsanguine mucous surfaces do not heal readily and recover their normal tone. Under such circumstances, iron has the power to restore vigor to the tissues, while, at the same time, tar checks the morbid secretion. "It is," says Trousseau," certainly the most satisfactory remedy in all affections attended with an excessive mucous or with a muco-purulent discharge; indeed, we may include all chronic inflammations of the mucous membrane, ulceration or non-ulceration."

All

The combination of iron with the tar permits the administration of these two restorative agents together. attempts hitherto to combine them have resulted only in thick mixtures which were disgusting to patients. But DUREL'S SYRUP has met with immense success, simply because it is pleasant to the taste as well as to the sight, and because it contains both iron and tar in a mixture at once intimate, constant, and easily absorbed. This Syrup has the especial advantage over all analogous preparations, in that it introduces at one and the same time into the system the two remedies,tar, and the most active restorative of the blood, iron. It stimulates the appetite, repairs the energies, and does not constipate the bowels.
