II. This effectual call is of God's free and fpecial grace alone, not from any thing at all foreseen in man i, who is altogether paffive therein, until, being quickened and renewed by the Holy Spirit k, he is thereby enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it 7.

III. Elect infants, dying in infancy, are regenerated and faved by Christ through the Spirit m, who worketh when, and where,

draw him: and I will raife him up at the last day. v. 45. It is written in the prophets, And they fhall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

Know ye not, that to whom ye yield your felves fervants to obey, his fervants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of fin unto death, or of obedience unto righteoufnefs:

V. 17 But God be thanked that ye were the fervants of fin; but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. v. 18. Being then made free from fin, ye became the fervants of righteoufnefs.

II. 2 Tim. i. 9. Who hath faved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpofe and grace which was given us in Chrift Jefus, before the world began. Tit. iii. 4. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, v. 5. Not by works of righteoufnefs which we have done, but according to his mercy, he faved us by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the holy Ghoft. Eph. ii. 4.

But God who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, v. 5. Even when we were dead, in fins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are faved) v. 8. For by grace are ye faved, through faith; and that not of yourfelves, it is the gift of God: v. 9. Not of works, left any man fhould boaft. Rom. ix. 11. For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpofe of God according to election might ftand, not of works, but of him that calleth.

k 1 Cor. ii. 14. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are fpiritually difcerned. Rom. viii. 7. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not fubject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Eph. ii. 5. Even when we were dead in fins, hath quickened us together with Chrift, (by grace ye are faved.)

Now if any man have not the Spirit of Chrift, he is none of his. (Compared together.)

Christian religion, be faved in any other way whatsoever, be they never fo diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature, and the law of that religion they do profefs; and to affert and maintain, that they may, is very pernicious, and to be detefted t.

CHAP. XI. Of Juftification.

HOSE whom God effectually calleth, he alfo freely juftifieth a not by infufing righteoufnefs into them, but by pardoning their fins, and by accounting and accepting their perfons as righteous: not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them, but for Chrift's fake alone: not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience, to them as their righteousnefs; but by imputing the obedience and fatiffaction of Chrift unto them b, they receiving and refting on him

Acts iv. 12. Neither is there falvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be faved. John xiv. 6. Jefus faith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Eph. ii. 12. That at that time ye were without Chrift, being aliens from the commonwealth of Ifrael, and strangers from the covenants of promife, having no hope, and without God in the world. * John iv. 22. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship; for falvation is of the Jews. John xvii. 3. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jefus Chrift whom thou haft fent.

I marvel, that ye are fo foon removed from him that called you unto the grace of Chrift, unto another gospel. v. 7. Which is not another; but there be fome that trouble you, and would per, vert the gospel of Chrift. v. 8, But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gofpel unto you, than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accurfed,

I. a Rom. viii. 30. Moreover, whom he did predeftinate, them he also called, and whom he called, them he alfo juftified: and whom he juflified, them he alfo glorified. Rom. iii. 24. Being juftified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Jefus Christ.

b Rom. iv. 5. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that juftifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteoufnefs. v. 6. Even as David alfo defcribeth the bleficuncfs of the man unto whom God imputeth

and his righteoufnefs by faith; which faith they have not of themselves, it is the gift of God c.

II. Faith, thus receiving and refting on Chrift and his righte

righteoufnefs without works, v. 7. Saying, Bleffed are they whofe iniquities are forgiven, and whofe fins are covered. v. 8. Bleffed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute fin. 2 Cor. v. 19. To wit, that God was in Chrift, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trefpaffes unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. v. 21. For he hath made him to be fin for us, who knew no fin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Rom. iii. 22. Even the righteoufnefs of God which is by faith of Jefus Chrift unto all, and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference.

24. Being juftified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Jefus Chrift; v. 25. Whom God hath fet forth to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to declare his righteoufnefs for the remiffion of fins that are paft, through the forbearance of God, v. 27. Where is boafting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. v. 28. Therefore we conclude, that a man is juftified by faith without the deeds of the law. Tit. iii. 5. Not by works of righteoufnefs which we have done, but according to his mercy he fayed us, by the washing of tion, and renewing of the holy Ghoft: y. 7. That being juftified by his grace, we fhould be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Eph. i. 7. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of fins, according to the riches of his grace. Jer. xxiii. 6. In his days Judah fhall be faved, and Ifrael fhall dwell fafely; and this is his name whereby he fhall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGH

TEOUSNESS. 1 Cor. i. 30. But of him are ye in Chrift Jefus, who of God is made unto us wifdom, and righteoufnefs, fanctification, and redemption. v. 31. That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. Rom. v. 17. For if by one man's offence, death reigned by one; much more they who receive abundance of grace, and of the gift of righteoufnefs, fhall reign in life by one, Jefus Chrift. v. 18. Therefore as by the offence of one, judgment came upon all men to condemnation: even fo by the righteoufnefs of one, the free gift came upon all men unto juftification of life. v. 19. For as by one man's difobedience, many were made finners: fo by the obedience of one, fhall many be made righteous.

c Acts x. 44. While Peter yet fpake these words, the holy Ghoft fell on all them who heard the word. Gal. ii. 16. Knowing that a man is not juftified by the works of the law, but by the faith. of Jefus Chrift; even we have believed in Jefus Chrift, that we might be juftified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law fhall no flesh be juftified. Phil. iii. 9. And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Chrift, the righteoufnefs which is of God by faith. Acts xiii. 38. Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached un-" to you the forgivenefs of fins: v. 39. And by him all that believe are juftified from all things, from which ye could not be juftified by the law of Mofes. Eph. ii. 7. That in

the

oufnefs, is the alone inftrument of juftification d; yet is it not alone in the perfon juftified, but is ever accompanied with all other faving graces, and is no dead faith, but worketh by love e.

III. Chrift, by his obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all thofe that are thus juftified, and did make a proper, real and full fatisfaction to his Father's juftice in their behalf f. Yet, in as much as he was given by the Father for them,

the ages to come he might fhew the exceeding riches of his grace, in his kindness towards us, through Chrift Jefus. v. 8. For by grace are ye faved, through faith; and that not of your felves it is the gift of God.

II. d John i. 12. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the fons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Rom. iii. 28. Therefore we conclude, that a man is juftified by faith, without the deeds of the law. Rom. v. I. Therefore being juftified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jefus Chrift.

e James ii. 17. Even fo faith, if it hath not works, is dead being alone. v. 22. Seeft thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? v. 26. For as the body without the fpirit is dead, fo faith without works is dead alfo. Gal. v. 6. For in Jefus Chrift, neither circumcifion availeth any thing, nor uncircumcifion; but faith which worketh by love.

III. fRom. v. 8. But God commendeth his love towards us, in that while we were yet finners, Chrift died for us. v. 9. Much more then being now juftified by his blood, we fhall be faved from wrath through him. v. 1o. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son: much more, being reconciled, we fhall be faved by his life. v. 19. For as by one man's difobedience, many were made finners: fo by the obedience of one, fhall many be made righteous. 1 Tim. ii. 5. For there is one God, and

one Mediator between God and men, the man Chrift Jefus; v. 6. Who gave himself a ranfom for all, to be teftified in due time. Heb. x. 10. By the which will we are fanctified, through the offering of the body of Jefus Chrift once for all. v. 14. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are fanctified. Dan.ix. 24. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the tranfgreffion, and to make an end of fins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteoufnefs, and to feal up the vifion and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. v. 26. And after threefcore and two weeks, fhall Meffiah be cut off, but not for himfelf and the people of the princ that fhall come, fhall destroy the city and the fanctuary, and the end thereof fhall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war defolations are determined. Ifa. liii. 4. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our forrows: yet we did efteem him ftricken, fmitten of God, and afflicted. v. 5. But he was wounded for our tranfgreffions, he was bruifed for our iniquities: the chaftifement of our peace was upon him, and with his ftripes we are healed. v. 6. All we like theep haye gone aftray: we have turned every one to his own way, and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. v. 10. Yet it pleafed the Lord to bruife him, he hath put him to grief: when thou fhalt make his foul an offering for fin, he E 4
