the Godhead and the manhood, were infeparably joined together in one perfon, without converfion, compofition or confufion n. Which perfon is very God, and very man, yet one Christ, the only Mediator between God and man o. III. The Lord Jefus, in his human nature thus united to the divine, was fanctified and anointed with the holy Spirit above measure p; having in him all the treafures of wifdom and knowledge q; in whom it pleafed the Father that all fulness fhould dwell: to the end, that being holy, harmlefs, undefiled, and full of grace and truth f, he might be thorowly furnished to execute the office of a Mediator and furety t. Which office he of the houfe of David; and the virgins name was Mary. v. 31. And behold, thou fhalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a Son, and fhalt call his name Jefus. v. 35. And the angel anfwered, and faid unto her, The holy Ghoft fhall come upon thee, and the power of the Higheft fhall overfhadow thee; therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee, fhall be called the Son of God. Whofe are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh, Chrift came, who is over all, God bleffed for ever. Amen. I Pet. iii. 18. For Christ also hath once fuffered for fins, the juft for the unjuft (that he might bring us to God) being put to death in the flesh, but quickned by the Spirit. Tim. iii. 16. And without controverfy, great is the mystery of godlinefs: God was manifeft in the flesh, juftified in the Spirit, feen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. Rom. i. 3. Concerning his Son Jefus Christ our Lord, which was made took not unto himself, but was thereunto called by his Father v, who put all power and judgment unto his hand, and commandment to execute the fame w. gave him IV. This office the Lord Jefus did moft willingly undertake x; which that he might difcharge, he was made under the law y, and did perfectly fulfil it z; endured most grievous torments immediately in his foul a, and moft painful fufferings in Ghost, and with power; who went a'bout doing good, and healing all that were oppreffed of the devil: for God was with him. Heb. xii. 24. And to Jefus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of fprinkling, that fpeaketh better things than that of Abel. Heb. vii. 22. By fo much was Jefus made a furety of a better teftament. Heb. v. 4. And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. v. 5. So alfo Chrift glorified not himself, to be made an high priest: but he that faid unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. w John v. 22. For the Father judgeth no man; but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: v. 27. And hath given him authority to execute judgment alfo, because he is the Son of man. Mat. xxviii. 18. Acts x. 42. And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to teftify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the judge of quick and dead. Mat. xiii. 40. As therefore the tares are gathered and burnt in the fire; fo fhall it be in the end of this world. v. 41. The Son of man fhall fend forth his angels, and they fhall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; v. 42. And fhall caft them into a furnace of fire: there fhall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Jude 6. And the angels which kept not their firft eftate, but left their own habitation, he hath referved in everlafting chains under darknefs, unto the judgment of the great day. 2 Pet. ii. 4. To declare, I fay, at this time his righteoufnefs: that he might be juft, and the juftifier of him which believeth in Jefus. / Dan. ix. 24. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the tranfgreffion, and to make an end of fins; and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteoufnefs, and to feal up the vifion and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. v. 26. And after threefcore and two weeks fhall Meffiah be cut off, but not for himfelf; and the people of the prince that shall come, fhall deftroy the city and the fanctuary, and the end thereof fhall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war defolations are determined. Col. i. 19. For it pleafed the Father, that in him fhould all fulnefs dwell; v. 20. And (having made peace through the blood of his crofs) by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I fay, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. Eph. i. 11. Although the work of redemption was not actually wrought by Chrift till after his incarnation, yet the vertue, efficacy and benefits thereof were .communicated unto the elect in all ages, fucceffively from the beginning of the world, in and by those promifes, types and facrifices, wherein he was revealed and fignified to be the feed of the woman which fhould bruife the ferpent's head, and the Lamb flain from the beginning of the world, being yesterday, and to day, the fame and for ever m. VII. Chrift, in the work of mediation, acteth according to both natures; by each nature doing that which is proper to itfelf n: yet, by reafon of the unity of the perfon, that which is proper to one nature, is fometimes in fcripture attributed to the perfon denominated by the other nature o. VIII. To all thofe for whom Chrift hath purchafed redemption, he doth certainly and effectually apply and communicate the fame p; making interceffion for over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou haft given him. Heb ix. 12. Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. v. 15. And for this caufe he is the mediator of the new teilament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the tranfgreffions that were under the firft teftament, they which are called might receive the promife of eternal inheritance.
