Chap. XXVIII. II. The outward element to be used in this facrament is water, wherewith the party is to be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Ghoft, by a minister of the gospel lawfully called thereunto'. III. Dipping of the perfon into the water is not neceffary, but baptifm is rightly adminiftred by pouring or fprinkling water upon the perfon k. IV. Not only thofe that do actually profefs faith in and obediencé unto Chrift /, but also the infants of one or both believing parents, are to be baptized m. them to obferve all things whatfoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. II. Mat. iii. II. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance; but he that cometh after me, is mightier than I, whofe fhoes I am not worthy to bear: he fhall baptize you with the holy Ghoft, and with fire. John i. 33. And I knew him not: but he that fent me to baptize with water, the fame faid unto me, Upon whom thou fhalt 'fee the Spirit defcending, and remaining on him, the fame is he who baptizeth with the holy Ghoft. Then they that gladly received his word, were baptized: and the fame day there were added unto them about three thoufand fouls, Acts xvi. 33. And he took them the fame hour of the night, and washed their ftripes, and was baptized, he and all his, ftraightway. Mark vii. 4. And when they come from the market, except they wafh, they eat not. And many other things there bc, which they have received to hold, as the washing cups and pots, brazen veffels, and of tables. of IV. / Mark xvi. 15. Al tized, fhall be faved; but he that believeth not, fhall be damned. Acts viii. 37. And Philip faid, if thou believeft with all thine heart, thou mayeft. And he answered and faid, I believe that Jefus Chrift is the Son of God. v. 38. And he commanded the chariot to ftand ftill: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 1 Gen. xvii. 7. And I will eftablish my covenant between me and thee, and thy feed after thee, in their generations, for an everlasting covenant; to be a God unto thee, and to thy feed after thee. v. 9. And God faid unto Abraham, Thou fhalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy feed after thee, in their generations. With Gal. iii. 9. So then they who be of faith, are bleffed with faithful Abraham. v. 14. That the bleffing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jefus Chrift; that we might receive the promife of the Spirit through faith. And Col. ii. II. In whom alfo ye are circumcifed with the circumcifion made without hands, in putting off the body of the fins of the flesh, by the circumcifion of Chrift: v. 12. Buried with him in baptifm, wherein alfo ye are rifen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raifed him from the dead. And Acts ii. 38. Then Peter faid unto them, Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of V. Although it be a great fin to contemn or neglect this ordinance n, yet grace and falvation are not fo infeparably annexed unto it, as that no perfon can be regenerated or faved without it o, or that all that are baptized are undoubtedly regenerated p. VI. The efficacy of baptifm is not tied to that moment of time wherein it is adminiftred q; yet notwithstanding, by the right ufe of this ordinance, the grace promised is not only offered, but really exhibited and conferred by the holy Ghost, to fuch of Jefus Chrift, for the remiffion of fins, and ye fhall receive the gift of the holy Ghoft. v. 39. For the promife is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God ihall call. And Rom. iv. II. And he received the fign of circumcifion, a feal of the righteoufnefs of the faith, which he had yet being uncircumcifed: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcifed; that righte oufnefs might be imputed unto them alfo: : v. 12. And the father of circumcifion to them, who are not of the circumcifion only, but alfo walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcifed. I Cor. vii. 14. For the unbelieving hufband is fanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is fanctified by the husband: elfe were your children unclean: but now they are holy. Mat. xxviii. 19. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Ghoft. Mark x. 13. And they brought young children to him that he should touch them; and his difciples rebuked thofe that brought them, v. 14. But when Jefus faw it, he was much difpleafed, and faid unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of fuch is the kingdom of God. v. 15. Verily I fay unto you, Whofoever fhall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he fhall not enter there in. v. 16. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and bleffed them. Luke xviii. 15. And they brought unto him alfo infants, that he would touch them: but when his difciples faw it, they rebuked them. V. n Luke vii. 30. But the Pharifees and lawyers rejected the counfel of God against themfelves, being not baptized of him. With Exod. iv. 24. And it came to pafs by the way in the inn, that the Lord met him, and fought to kill him. v. 25. Then Zipporah took a fharp ftone, and cut off the foreskin of her fon, and caft it at his feet, and faid, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me. v. 26. So he let him go: then fhe faid, a bloody hufband thou art, becaufe of the circumcifion. o Rom. iv. 11. (See in letter m.) Acts x. 2, 4, 22, 31, 45, 47. p. Acts viii. 13. Then Simon himself believed alfo: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and figns which were done. v. 23. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. VI. q John iii. 5. Jefus anfwered, Verily, verily, I fay unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. v. 8. The wind bloweth where it lifteth, and thou heareft the found thereof, but canft not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: fo is every one that is born of the Spirit. » Gal. fuch (whether of age or infants) as that grace belongeth unto, according to the counfel of God's own will, in his appointed time r. VII. The facrament of baptifm is but once to be adminiftred to any perfons. CHAP. XXIX. Of the Lord's Supper. OUR Lord Jefus, in the night wherein he was betrayed, instituted the facrament of his body and blood, called the Lord's Supper, to be obferved in his church unto the end of the world, for the perpetual remembrance of the facrifice of himself in his death, the fealing all benefits thereof unto true believers, their spiritual nourishment and growth in him, their farther engagement in and to all duties which they owe unto him: and to be a bond and pledge of their communion with him, and with each other, as members of his myftical body a. r Gal. iii. 27. For as many of you, as have been baptized into Chrift, have put on Chrift. Tit. iii. 5. Not by works of righteoufnefs which we have done, but according to his mercy, he faved us by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the holy Ghoft. Eph. v. 25. Hufbands, love your wives, even as Chrift alfo loved the church, and gave himself for it; v. 26. That he might fanctify and cleanfe it with the washing of water by the word. Acts ii. 38. For I have received of the Lord, that which alfo I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jefus, the fame night in which he was betrayed, took bread: v. 24. And when II. In he had given thanks, he brake it, and faid, Take, eat; this is my body which is broken for you: this do in remem brance of me. v. 25. After the fame manner alfo he took the cup, when he had fupped, faying, This cup is the new teftament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. v. 26. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do fhew the Lord's death till he come. I Cor. x. 16. The cup of bleffing which we blefs, is it not the communion of the blood of Chrift? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Chrift? v. 17. For we being many, are one bread and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. v. 21. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils; ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. 1 Cor. xii. 13. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one fpirit. II. b Heb. 145 II. In this facrament, Chrift is not offered up to his Father, nor any real facrifice made at all, for remiffion of fins of the quick or dead b; but only a commemoration of that one offering up of himself, by himself, upon the crofs, once for all; and a fpiritual oblation of all poffible praife unto God for the fame c; fo that the popish facrifice of the mafs, as they call it, is moft abominably injurious to Chrift's one only facrifice, the alone propitiation for all the fins of the elect d. III. The Lord Jefus hath, in this ordinance, appointed his minifters to declare his word of inftitution to the people, to pray, and bless the elements of bread and wine, and thereby to fet them apart from a common to a holy ufe; and to take, and break the bread, to take the cup, and (they communicating alfo themselves) to give both to the communicants e; but to none who II. b Heb. ix. 22. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without fhedding of blood is no remiffion. v. 25. Nor yet that he fhould offer himself often, as the high prieft entreth into the holy place every year with blood of others: v. 26. (For then must he often have fuffered fince the foundation of the world) but how once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away fin by the facrifice of himself. v. 28. So Chrift was once offered to bear the fins of many; and unto thofe that look for him, fhall he appear the fecond time, without fin, unto falvation, CI Cor. xi. 24, 25, 26. (See them in letter a.) Mat. xxvi. 26. And as they were eating, Jefus took bread, and bleffed it, and brake it, and gave it to the difciples, and faid, Take, eat; this is my body. v. 27. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave them, faying, Drink ye all of it. it to d Heb. vii. 23. And they truly were many priests, becaufe they were not fuf. fered to continue by reafon of death: v. 24. But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priefthood. v. 27. Who needeth not daily, as thofe high pricfts, to offer up facri fice, firft for his own fins, and then for the peoples: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. Heb. x. II, And every prieft ftandeth daily miniftring, and offering oftentimes the fame facrifices, which can never take away fins: v. 12. But this man, after he had of fered one facrifice for fins for ever, fat down on the right hand of God. v. 14. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are fanctified. y. 18. Now where reniffion of thefe is, there is no more offering for fin. III. e Mat. xxvi. 26, 27. (See in let ter c.) v. 28. For this is my blood of the new teftament, which is fhed for many for the remiffion of fins. And Mark xiv. 22. IV. Private maffes, or receiving this facrament by a priest or any other alone g, as likewife the denial of the cup to the people, worshipping the elements, the lifting them up, or carrying them about for adoration, and the referving them for any pretended religious ufe, are all contrary to the nature of this facrament, and to the inftitution of Chrifti. V. The outward elements in this facrament, duly fet apart to the uses ordained by Chrift, have fuch relation to him crucified, as that truly, yet facramentally only, they are fometimes called by the name of the things they reprefent, to wit, the body and blood of Chrift k; albeit, in fubftance and nature, they still remain truly and only bread, and wine, as they were before 1. VI. That doctrine which maintains a change of the fubftance of bread and wine, into the fubftance of Chrift's body and blood do in remembrance of me. v. 20. Likewife alfo the cup after fupper, faying, This cup is the new teftament in my blood, which is fhed for you. With I Cor. xi. 23, 24, 25, 26. (See all in letter a.) f Acts xx. 7. And upon the first day of the week, when the difciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow, and continued his fpeech until mid-night. 1 Cor. xi. 20. When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's fupper. IV. g I Cor. x. 6. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not luft after evil things, as they also lufted. h Mark xiv. 23. (See in letter c.) 1 Cor. xi. 25, 26. (See letter a.) v. 27. Wherefore, whofoever fhall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord unworthily, fhall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. v. 28. But let a man examine himself, and fo let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. v. 29. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eat (com eth and drinketh damnation to himfelf, not difcerning the Lord's body. i Mat. xv. 9. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. V. k Mat. xxvi. 26.
