Then was fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy:

Behold! my Chosen shall nor strive, nor cry,

Nor smoking flax shall quench, nor reed shall break, Till vengeance on his enemies I take.

Gentle and meek, wise, prudent, faithful, just,

In him the Gentile world shall put their trust.
Then brought they one, whom Satan's chain had bound-
Blind, deaf and dumb, in darkness deep profound.
Him Jesus healed, a word his bondage broke:
The blind beheld! the dumb both heard and spoke!
"Is this not David's son ?”-th' astonished crowd
Grateful exclaim. Jealous, perverse, and proud,
The Pharisees his healing power divine
To Beelzebub ascribe,-defame-malign!
Jesus their thoughts perceived, and thus replied:
"What kingdom, or what house, if it divide,
But comes to desolation? Satan's reign,
(If Satan cast out Satan) clove in twain,
Hath speedy end; but if-as Aaron's rod
The serpents slew-I, by the pow'r of God,

[blocks in formation]

God's kingdom now is come, howe'er your pride
Deny me and revile. Wherefore of Heaven

All blasphemy and sin shall be forgiven,
Save blasphemy against the Holy Ghost;
Who so blasphemes, is soul and body lost.
'Gainst me who speaks, repentance may redeem;
But he who dares the Holy Ghost blaspheme,
Neither in this life, neither in the next,
Shall pardon gain-whatever the pretext.
O viperous generation! How can ye,
Being evil, speak aright? Is not the tree
Known by its fruit? So you, corrupt and vile,

Speak from the heart-replete with fraud and guile.'
Vain the attempt minutely to rehearse

Thy glorious miracles, in rhyme or verse,

Great Saviour of the World! So should my song
Tell feebly what-if thou thy aid prolong-
Shall, like the foaming waters, which our God
Upbore-blessed ark of refuge!—when he trod

Their mountain billows-bold, sublime, and strong,

Melt every heart with dread, and pour along.
At dawn, a little bark is on the wave,

Around whose mast the giant surges rave;
O'er-spent with toil, some in oblivious sleep
Seek brief repose, others attentive keep
An anxious watch; the wind is contrary;
Distant the peaceful shore, and danger nigh.
"Wherefore did Jesus, who with heavenly bread,

Five thousand, with five loaves in pity fed,

Dismiss us here to perish?

In this distressful hour?"

What form majestic walks?

Where is he

Lo! on the sea,

They shriek with fear:

"It is a spirit!" "Be ye of good cheer,"—

Jesus exclaimed-"'Tis I, be not afraid."

"If it be thee," the daring Peter said,

"Bid me descend, O Lord, and come to thee."

Jesus said, "Come!"-Base infidelity,

Thou hope-destroying bane of human kind,

Shake not his faith. But hark! the stormy wind

Is roaring loud; he sinking and afraid,

Cries, "Save me Lord, I perish !" To his aid,
Jesus his arm extended, and upheld;

"O thou of little faith, why hath fear quelled
Thy confidence in me?" His Godlike guide
Supports, and leads him up the vessel's side.
Now all is calm; th' obedient wind no more
Howls awful; hushed the tempest's maddening roar.
Astonished beyond measure, Him they call

Son of the living God! then prostrate fall
Before him and adore. Now to the bay,
Wafted by gentle gales, they plough their way,
And moor their bark rejoicing. As they land,
Expecting thousands line the verdant strand

Of that broad lake, whose fertile vales abound
With fruits and flowers various: there is found
Pure virgin honey; there industrious roam
The ever swarming bees. Than honey-comb
Sweeter his words: such precious balm distil
As cloys not-curative of every ill.

His voice dispels the darkness of the soul;

They touch in faith his garment, and are whole.
Jesus departing thence, toward the coast

Of Tyre and Sidon turned. Cities the boast
Of former ages, for their sins o'erthrown,

By that famed Grecian king, whose exploits shone
Bright as his beamy helmet, till the bowl
Herculean drained, subdued his mighty soul.
Him, Daniel-loved of God-in height of pride
Uprooted saw, and his dominion wide

Partitioned. Him no warrior son succeeds,
But with his mother perishes; such deeds
Bring "bloody retribution; by the sword
He who unjustly slays, shall fall," the word
Of God declares; into captivity

Who leads himself shall likewise captive die.
A sword the son of Alexander slays,

In isle remote Napoleon ends his days.
Whilst Wellington who, in his country's cause,
The mighty sword of God and Gideon draws,
