PREFACE.

For the sake of historical sequence I have treated my subject in chronological order. Those, however, who wish to read at once that portion of the work which relates to the American Irish of to-day, and their influence on Irish politics, will find the requisite information at once in Part II.

I have to acknowledge with thanks the courtesy of the Times in allowing me to reprint two letters upon Irish Colonization, which I contributed, in October, 1881, to the columns of that journal during my tour in Minnesota.
