THE present Volumes are in great part grounded on the "History of the Old and New Testaments" by the Rev. Joseph Reeve. But many passages and some entire portions of that work have been rewritten; and even where the original has been in substance retained, both language and style have been considerably remodelled, in order to bring them into a closer conformity with the requirements of modern diction. Care, however, has been taken to preserve the simplicity of the narrative, and to adhere, as much as possible, to the plain and practical character of the reflections with which the author had interspersed his history. It may be added, that Bishop Challoner's "Abstract" has also been occasionally followed.
