ration, in this very antient and illustrious family, but as the inftrument with which this bloody act was perpetrated, is very different ly described by so very respectable authors as Lord Clarendon, Sir Simon D'Ewes, and Dr. Wotton (none of whom appear to have had any communication with each other, and one of whom afferts that it was bought of a cutler, on Tower-hill, for ten-pence) from this contradictory teftimony the public must be left to draw their own conclufions.

FROM Newnham Regis the river Avon, with little diverfity of scenery, runs nearly in a strait direction, till we reach Bretford bridge, a distance of about two miles. This antient stone structure is in the Gothic style, and confifts of five arches. The bridge, though a confpicuous object on our river, is yet unaccompanied by any fuch feature in landscape as can give it a claim to the appellation of picturefque or beautiful. In this place there

was formerly a small cell for nuns, founded by the fon of Geffery Clinton, who erected the Castle and Priory of Kenilworth, but the first votress not liking the fituation, she paffed away the lands to the canons of the last men
