24 with the crowd making a bustle, he said to them, Withdraw, for the 25 young woman is not dead, but asleep. And they derided him: but when the people were put out, he entered, and having taken her by the 26 hand, the young woman arose. Now the fame of this action spread through all that country.

27 When Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, 28 Son of David, have pity upon us. Being come into the house, the blind meu approached him: and Jesus said to them, Do you believe that I 29 can do this? They answered, Yes, Master. Then he touched their 30 eye, saying, Be it to you according to your faith. Immediately their

eyes were opened. And Jesus strictly charging them, said, Take care 31 that no person know it. But being departed, they spread his fame through all that country.

32 They were scarcely gone, when a dumb demoniac was presented to 33 him. The demon being expelled, the dumb spoke, and the people 34 wondered, saying, Nothing like this was ever seen in Israel. But the Pharisees said, He expels the demons by the prince of the demons.

SECTION V.

The Charge to the Apostles.

THEN Jesus went through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the glad tidings of the Reign, and 36 curing every disease and every malady. But when he saw the multitudes, he had compassion upon them, because they were scattered and 37 exposed, like a flock without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, 38 The harvest is plentiful, but the reapers are few: entreat, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he would send laborers to reap it.

X.-And having called to him his twelve disciples, he gave them power to expel unclean spirits, and to cure diseases and maladies of 2 every kind. Now these are the names of the twelve apostles: The first, Sinen, called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James, son of Zeb3 edee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James, son of Alpheus, and Lebbeus, surnamed 4 Thaddeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, he who betrayed 5 him. These twelve Jesus commissioned, instructing them, and saying, 6 Go not away to the Gentiles, nor enter a Samaritan city; but go 7 directly to the lost sheep of the stock of Israel. And as you go, pro8 claim, saying, The Reign of Heaven approaches. Heal the sick, raise the dead; cleanse lepers, expel demons; freely you have received, 9- freely give. Put not gold, or silver, or brass in your girdles; carry no travelling bag, no spare coats, shoes, or staff; for the workman is worthy of his maintenance.

And whatever city or village you enter, inquire what person of worth dwells there; and abide with him until you leave the place. 12 When you enter the house, salute the family. If the family be worthy, 13 the peace you wish them shall come upon them: if they be not worthy, 14 it shall rebound upon yourselves. Wheresoever they will not receive

you, nor regard your words, in departing that house or city, shake the 15 dust off your feet. Indeed, I say to you, the condition of Sodom and Gomorrha shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment, than the condition of that city.

16 Behold! I send you forth as sheep amidst wolves. Be therefore prudent 17 as the serpents, and harmless as the doves. But be upon your guard against these men; for they will deliver you to councils, and scourge 18 you in their synagogues; and you shall be brought before governors and kings, on my account, to bear testimony to them, and to the Gen19 tiles. But when they deliver you up, be not anxious how, or what you shall speak; for what you shall speak shall be suggested to you in that 20 moment. For it shall not be you that shall speak; but the Spirit of

21 my Father, who will speak by you. Then the brother wi!! deliver up the brother to death; and the father the child; and children will arise 22 against their parents, and procure their death. And for my name you shall be hated universally. But the man who perseveres to the end, shall be saved.

23

Therefore, when they persecute you in one city, flee to another; for indeed, I say to you, you shall not have gone through the cities of Israel, 24 till the Son of Man be come. A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a 25 servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be as his

teacher, and for the servant to be as his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more his domestics? 26 Therefore, fear them not; for there is nothing bid that shall not be 27 detected; nothing secret that shall not be known. What I tell you in the dark, publish in the light; and what is whispered in your ear, pro28 claim from the house tops. And fear not them who kill the body, but

cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and 29 body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet neither of 30 them falls to the ground without your Father. Nay, the very hairs of 31 your head are all numbered. Fear not, then; you are much more val 32 uable than sparrows. Whoever, therefore, shall acknowledge ne

before men, him will I also acknowledge before my Father who is in 33 heaven. But whoever shall disown me before men, him will I also disown before my Father who is in heaven.

34 Think not that I am come to bring peace to the earth. I came not to 35 bring peace, but a sword. For I am come to cause dissension between father and son, between mother and daughter, between mother-in-law 36 and daughter-in-law; so that a man's enemies will be found in his own. family. He who loves father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me. He who loves son or daughter more than me, is not worthy o me. He who will not take his cross and follow me, is not worthy o 9 me. He who preserves his life, shall lose it: but he who loses his life, on my account, shall preserve it:

40 He that receives you, receives me; and he that receives me, receives 41 him who sent me. He that receives a prophet, because he is a prophet,

shall obtain a prophet's reward; and he that receives a righteous man, because he is a righteous man, shall receive a righteous man's reward: 42 and whosoever shall give one of these little ones, because he is my disciple, a single cup of cold water, to drink; indeed, I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.

XI.-When Jesus had made an end of instructing his twelve disciples, be departed thence to teach and give warning in the cities.

SECTION VI.

The Character of the Times.

2 NOW John, having heard in prison of the works of the Mersiah, 3 sent two of his disciples, who asked him, Are you he that comes, or 4 must we expect another? Jesus answering, said to them, Go and relate 6 to John what you have heard and seen. The blind are made to see, lame to walk; lepers are cleansed; the deaf hear; the dead are raiad; 6 and good news is brought to the poor: and happy is he to whom ĺ shall not prove a stumbling block.

7 When they were departed, Jesus said to the people concerning John, What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken 8 by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man effeminately 9 dressed? It is king's palaces that such frequent. What then did you go to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and something superior to a 10 prophet: for this is he concerning whom it is written, "Behold I will 11 send my angel before you, who shall prepare your way." Indeed, I

From the first appearing of John the Immerser until now, the kingdom of heaven is invaded, and invaders take pos13 session by force. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. XII.-At that time, as Jesus was walking through the corn on the 2 Sabbath, his disciples being hungry, began to pluck the ears of corn, and 3 ples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath. He answered, to eat them. The Pharisees observing this, said to him, Lo! your disci4 hungry; how he entered the tabernacle of God, and eat the loaves of Have you not read what David did, and his attendants, when they were 5 but solely for the priests? Or have you not learnt from the law, that the presence, which was not lawful for him, or his attendants, to eat, 7 bere. But had you known what this means, "I desire humanity and 6 are blameless? Now I affirm that something greater than the temple is the priests in the temple violate the rest to be observed on Sabbaths, and S not sacrifice," you would not have condemned the guiltless: for the Son 11 accuse him, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? He answered, What 10 there whose hand was blasted. They asked Jesus, with a design to 9 Leaving that place, he went into their synagogue, 12 the Sabbath, will not lay hold on it, and lift it out? And does not a man man is there amongst you, who having one sheep, if it fall into a pit on 14 out; it became sound like the other. But the Pharisees went out, and 13 Then he said to the man, Stretch out your hand. greatly excel a sheep? It is lawful, therefore, to do good on the Sabbath. 15 Jesus knowing this, departed; and being followed by a vast multitude, 16 healed all their sick, enjoining them not to make him known. Thus the 15 word of the Prophet Isaiah was verified, "Behold my servant whom I

have chosen, my beloved in whom my soul delignts; I will cause my 19 Spirit to abide upon him, and he shall give laws to the nations; he will 20 not contend, nor clamor, nor cause his voice to be heard in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break; and a dimly burning taper he will not 21 quench, till he render his laws victorious. Nations also shall trust in his name."

22 Then was brought to him a demoniac dumb and blind, and he cured 23 him, so that he both spoke and saw. And all the people said with 24 amazement, Is this the son of David? But the Pharisees hearing them,

said. This man expels demons only by Beelzebub, prince of the demons. 23 But Jesus, knowing their surmises, said to them, By intestine dissersions any kingdom may be desolated; and no city or family, where such dis 26 sensions are, can subsist. Now if Satan expel Satan, his kingdom is torn 27 by intestine dissensions; how can it then subsist? Besides, if I expel demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons expel them? Wherefore 28 they shall be your judges. But if I expel demons by the Spirit of God, 29 the Reign of God has overtaken you. For how can one enter the strong one's house, and plunder his goods, unless he first overpower the strong 30 one? Then indeed he may plunder his house. He who is not for me, is against me: and he who gathers not with me, scatters.

31 Wherefore I say to you, though every other sin and detraction in men 32 is pardonable, their detraction from the Spirit is unpardonable: for whosoever shall inveigh against the Son of Man may obtain pardon; but whosoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, shall never be pardoned, 33 either in the present state, or in the future. Either call the tree good,

and its fruit good; or call the tree bad, and its fruit bad: for we distin 34 guish the tree by the fruit. Offspring of vipers! how can you that are 35 evil speak good things, since it is out of the fulness of the heart that the

mouth speaks. The good man, out of his good treasure, produces good 36 things; the bad man, out of his bad treasure, produces bad things. Be assured, however, that of every pernicious word which men shall utter 37 they shall give an account on the day of judgment. For by your words you shall be acquitted; and by your words you shall be condemned.

38 Then some of the Scribes and Pharisees interposed, saying, Rabbi, we 39 desire to see a sign from you. He answering, said to them, An evil and adulterous race demands a sign; but no sign shall be given it, but the 40 sign of the Prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the stomach of the great fish, the Son of Man will be three 41 days and three nights in the bosom of the earth. The Ninevites will stand up in the judgment against this race, and cause it to be condemned, because they reformed when they were warned by Jonah; and behold 42 here something greater than Jonah. The Queen of the South country will arise in the judgment against this race, and cause it to be condemned; because she came from the extremities of the earth to hear the wise discourses of Solomon; and behold here something greater than Solomon.

43 An unclean spirit, when he is gone out of a man, wanders over parch44 ed deserts in search of a resting place. And not finding any, he says, I will return to my house whence I came; and being come, he finds it 45 empty, swept, and garnished. Then he goes, and brings with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and having entered, they dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first: thus will it fare with this evil race.

46 While he discoursed to the people, his mother and brothers were 47 without, desiring to speak with him. And one said to him, Your mother 48 and your brothers are without, desiring to speak with you. He an

swering, said to him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are 49 my brothers? Then stretching out his hand towards his disciples, he 50 said, Behold my mother and my brothers. For whosoever does toe will of my Father who is in heaven, is my brother, and sister, and nother.

SECTION VII.

Parables.

93

XIII.-THE same day, Jesus having gone out of the house, sat by the 2 sea side; but so great a multitude flocked about him, that he went into a bark, and sat down there, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he discoursed to them of many things in parables.

4 The sower, said he, went out to sow; and in sowing, some seeds fell
5 by the way side, and the birds came and picked them up: some fell on
rocky ground, where they had but little earth: these sprang up the soon-

into good ground, and yielded increase, some a hundred, some sixty,

10 Then the disciples addressed him, saying, Why do you speak to them 11 in parables? He answering, said to them,' Because it is your privilege, 12 and not theirs, to know the secrets of the Reign of Heaven. For to him that has, more shall be given, and he shall abound; but from him that 13 has not, even that which he has shall be taken.

14 hear not, nor regard; insomuch that this prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled in speak to them in parables; because they seeing, see not; and hearing, 15 but will not perceive. For this people's understanding is stupified, their them, "You will indeed hear, but will not understand; you will look, eyes, hearing with their ears, and apprehending with their understandears are deafened, and their eyes they have closed; lest seeing with their 16 ing, they should reform, and I should reclaim them." But blessed are 17 your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. For, Indeed, I say to you, that many prophets and righteous men have desired to see the things which you see, but have not seen then; and to hear the

things which you hear, but have not heard them.

18 Understand you, therefore, the parable of the sower. 20 what fell by the way side. That which fell on rocky ground, denotes and snatches away that which was sown in his heart.
