SEPTEMBER 23-24.

ISAIAH xlix. 16.

Behold I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.

LUKE xxiv. 39.

Behold my hands and my

feet that

it is I myself.

SWAIN E.

;

I love to think of heav'n where I shall meet
My fellow-travellers, and where no more
With grief or sin my mind will be disturb'd
Where holy saints and holy angels dwell
In constant harmony and mutual love.
But, when my heart anticipates the light
Of God's Incarnate, wearing on his side,
And hands, and feet, those marks of love
divine,

Which he on Calvary for me endur'd,
All heaven beside is swallowed up in this:
And He who is my hope of heav'n below,
Appears the glory of my heav'n above.

SEPTEMBER 25-26.

ISAIAH ii. 3.

For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

LUKE xxiv. 47.

And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name nations beginning

among

all

at

Jerusalem.

REV. R. M. BENSO N.

Mount Zion is the chosen seat, the holy mount of God;

There He hath placed his name, and there his holy feet have trod,

How blest are they that thence go forth, glad tidings to proclaim,

To faithful penitents that trust in his Almighty Name.

That name, beyond all others, shall our sinking hearts renew;

Baptised therein, we know its power, for He who spoke is true,

Thus raised with Christ, from sin set free, let us give all our days

To worship him with thoughts and words and constant deeds of praise.

SEPTEMBER 27-28.

PSALM lxviii. 18.

Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive.

LUKE xxiv. 51.

And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.

TATE AND BRADY.

Erect your heads, eternal gates,
Unfold to entertain

The king of glory! see He comes
With his celestial train.

Who is the king of glory? who?
The Lord for strength renown'd,
In battle mighty, o'er His foes,
Eternal victor crown'd.

Erect your heads, ye gates unfold
In state to entertain,

The king of glory; see, He comes
With all His shining train.

Who is this king of glory? who?
The Lord of Hosts renown'd;
Of glory He alone is king,
Who is with glory crown'd.

SEPTEMBER 29-30.

ISAIAH XXXv. 10.

And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

LUKE xxiv. 52-53.

And they returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple, praising, and blessing God.

MERRICK.

E'en now to my expecting eyes
The heaven-built towers of Salem rise,
E'en now with glad survey,

I view her mansions that contain,
Th' angelic forms, an awful train

And shine with cloudless day.

Hither from earth's remotest end,
Lo, the redeem'd of God ascend:
Their tribute hither bring;
Here crown'd with everlasting joy,
In hymns of praise their tongues employ,
And hail the immortal king.

St. John.

OCTOBER 1.

GEN. i. 1.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

JOHN i. 1.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

COWPER.

Ere God had built the mountains
Or rais'd the fruitful hills;

Before he fill'd the fountains
That feed the running hills ;
In me from everlasting,
The wonderful I AM,
Found pleasures never-wasting,
And Wisdom is my name.
When, like a tent to dwell in,
He spread the skies abroad,
And swath'd about the swelling
Of ocean's mighty flood;

He wrought by weight and measure;
And I was with him then;
Myself the Father's pleasure,
And mine the sons of men.
