THE study of unfulfilled prophecy must be a duty, inasmuch as it occupies so great a part of Divine revelation. Yet the number of students of prophecy is but an infinitesimal portion of even the devout readers of the Bible. Whatever causes have contributed to this result, the thing is not consistent with a real belief that the Bible is a Divine revelation intended for all. In order rightly to understand the Bible, we must give it diligent study, with earnest prayer. But although the most multifarious learning may be profitably employed in the illustration of Scripture, the great outlines of its dogmatic teaching and predictions of future events are within the reach of all earnest, though unlearned students. Throughout this century the time of the second advent has at times attracted considerable attention, followed by seasons of great neglect, chiefly through the discredit thrown on the inquiry by the mistakes of prophetical students. し |
