saying, Why say the Scribes that Elijah must come first ? 11 Jesus answering, said to them. To consummate the whole, ch, 11, 14. 12 Elijah indeed must come first. But I tell you, Elijah is come
already, though they did not acknowledge him, but have
treated him as they pleased. Thus they will treat the Son 13 of Man also. Then the disciples understood that he spake
concerning John the Baptist. 14 When they were come to the multitude, a man came to him, 15 who kneeling, said, Sir, have pity on my son: for he is griev- Mar. 9, 14
ously distressed with lunacy : often he falleth into the fire, 16 and often into the water; and I presented him to thy disciples, 17 but they could not cure him. Jesus answering, said, O un
believing and perverse race! How long shall I be with you? 18 How long shall I suffer you? Bring him hither to me.
Then Jesus rebuked the demon, and he came out : and the lad
was instantly cured. 19 Hereupon the disciples came to him privately, saying, Why Mar. 9. 28• 20 could not we expel this demon? Jesus answered, Because of Lu, 17, 6.
your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, if he had faith, though but as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say to this
mountain, Remove to yonder place, and it would remove; 21 yea nothing would be impossible to you. This kind, however,
is not dispossessed, unless by prayer and fasting. 22 While they remained in Galilee, Jesus said to them, The ch. 16, 21. 23 Son of Man is to be delivered up to men who will kill him : Mar. 9, 31.
but the third day he shall be raised again. And they were
grieved exceedingly. 24 When they were come to Capernaum the collectors came
and asked Peter, Doth not your teacher pay the didrachma ?* 25 He said, Yes. Being come into the house before he spoke,
Jesus said to him, What is thy opinion, Simon? From
whom do the kings of the earth exact tribute or custom ? 26 From their own sons, or from others ? Peter answered, From 27 others. Jesus replied, The sons then are exempted. Never
theless, lest we should give them offence, go to the sea and
give it them for me and thee. XVIII. At that time the disciples came to Jesus inquiring, Mar. 9, 334

whosoever shall insnare any of these little ones who believe
it were better for him that an upper mill-stone were hanged about his neck, and that he were sunk in the ocean. 7 Woe unto the world because of snares; snares indeed there 8 must be; nevertheless, woe to the insnarer. Wherefore, if
thy hand or thy foot insnare thee, cut it off, and throw it away; it is better for thee to enter lame or maimed into life,
than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the ever9 lasting fire. And if thine eye insnare thee, pluck it out, and
throw it away; it is better for thee to enter one-eyed into 10 life, than having two eyes to be cast into hell-fire. Beware
of contemning any of these little ones; for I assure you that
in heaven_their angels continually behold the face of my 11 heavenly Father; and the Son of Man is come to recover 12 the lost. What think ye? If a man have a hundred sheep,
and one of them have strayed, will he not leave the ninety13 nine upon the mountains, and go in quest of the stray? And
if he happen to find it, verily I say unto you, he deriveth
greater joy from it than from the ninety-nine which went not 14 astray. Thus it is not the will of your Father in heaven that

Wherefore, if thy brother trespass against thee, go and expostulate with him, when thou and he are alone together 16 If he hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother : but if he will
not hear, take one or two along with thee, and by the testi

ter, cried, “Have patience with me, my Lord, and I will pay 27 the whole.' And his master had compassion upon him, and 28 dismissed him, remitting the debt. But this servant, as he
went out, meeting one of his fellow-servants, who owed him
a hundred denarii,* seized him by the throat, saying, Pay 29 me what thou owest.' His fellow-servant threw himself at
his feet, and besought him, saying, ' Have patience with me, 30 and I will pay thee.' And he would not, but instantly
caused him to be imprisoned, until he should discharge the 31 debt. His fellow-servants seeing this, were deeply affected,
and went and informed their master of all that had passed. 32 Then his master having given orders to call him, said to
him, Thou wicked servant; all that debt I forgave thee, 33 because thou besoughtest me. Oughtest not thou to have
shown such pity to thy fellow-servant as I showed to thee ?' 34 So his master, being provoked, delivered him to the jailors,
to remain in their hands until he should clear the debt. 35 Thus will my celestial Father treat every one of you
who forgiveth not from his heart the faults of his brother.
SECTION X.—THE RICH Man's APPLICATION.
XIX. WHEN Jesus had ended his discourse, he left Galilee, Mar. 10, 1. 2 and came into the confines of Judea upon the Jordan, whither
great multitudes followed him; and he healed their sick. 3 Then some Pharisees came to him, and trying him, asked, Mar.10, 2.
Can a man lawfully upon every pretence, divorce his wife? 4 He answered, Have ye not read, that at the beginning, when Gen. 1, 27.
the Creator made man, he formed a male and a female, and 5 said “ For this cause a man shall leave father and mother, Gen. 2, 24. and adhere to his wife; and they two shall be one flesh.” L.Cor: 6,16.
Eph. 5, 6 Wherefore they are no longer two, but one flesh. What 7 then God hath conjoined, let not man separate. They re
plied, Why then did Moses command to give a writing of 8 divorcement, and dismiss her? He answered, Moses, indeed, Deut. 21, 1.

commit murder. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou 19 shalt not steal. Thou shalt not give false testimony. Ho
nour thy father and mother: and love thy neighbour as thy20 self.” The young man replied, All these I have observed 21 from my childhood; wherein am I still deficient? Jesus
answered, If thou wouldst be perfect, go sell thy estate, and
give the price to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in 22 heaven; then come and follow me. The young man hearing
this, went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. Mar. 10. 23. 23 Whereupon Jesus said to his disciples, Verily I say unto
you, it is difficult for a rich man to enter the kingdom of 24 heaven : I say further, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye
of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the king25 dom of God. His disciples, who heard this with amazement, 26 said, Who then can be saved? Jesus, looking at them, an
swered, With men this is impossible, but with God every
thing is possible.
27 Then Peter replying, said, As for us, we have forsaken all, Lu. 18, 28- 28 and followed thee; what then shall be our reward? Jesus
answered, Verily I say unto you, that at the renovation, when the Son of Man shall be seated on his glorious throne, ye,
my followers, sitting also upon twelve thrones, shall judge 29 the twelve tribes of Israel. And whosoever shall have for
saken, on my account, houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, shall receive a hun
dred-fold, and inherit eternal life. 30 But
shall be first that are last, and last that are first. Lu. 13, 30. XX. For the administration of heaven will resemble the con
duct of a householder, who went out early in the morning to 2 hire labourers for his vineyard. Having agreed with some 3 for a denarius* a-day, he sent them into his vineyard. About
the third hourt he went out, and seeing others unemployed 4 in the market-place, said to them, Go ye likewise into my

6 the ninth, * he went out and did the same. Lastly, about the
eleventh hour † he went out, and finding others unemployed,
said to them, “Why stand ye all the day here doing nothing? 7 They answered, Because nobody hath hired us. He said
to them, “Go ye also into my vineyard, and ye shall receive 8 what is reasonable.' When it was night, the proprietor of
the vineyard said to his steward, Call the labourers, and
pay them their wages, beginning with the last, and ending 9 with the first.' Then they who had been hired at the eleventh 10 hour came, and received each a denarius. When the first
came, they imagined they should get more; but they got 11 only a denarius a-piece. Upon receiving it, they murmured 12 against the householder, saying, “These last have worked
but one hour; yet thou hast made them equal to us who 13 have borne the burden and the heat of the day. He an
swering said to one of them, “Friend, I do thee no injury. 14 Didst thou not agree with me for a denarius? Take what
is thine, and depart. It is my will to give to this last as 15 much as to thee. And may not I do what I will with mine 16 own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good ?' Thus the
ch. 22, 14. last shall be first, and the first last; for there are many called, but few chosen.
SECTION XI.- THE ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM.
17 WHEN Jesus was on the road to Jerusalem, he took the Mar.10, 3218 twelve disciples aside, and said to them, We are now going ch. 16, 21.
to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man shall be delivered to the 19 chief priests and the Scribes, who will condemn him to die,
and consign him to the Gentiles, to be mocked, and scourged,
and crucified: but the third day he shall rise again. 20 Then the mother of Zebedee's children came to him with her Mar. 10, 35
sons, and, prostrating herself, entreated he would grant the re21 quest she had to make. He said to her, What wouldst thou ?
She answered, That, in thy reign, one of these my two sons 22 may sit on thy right hand, the other at thy left. jesus reply
ing, said, Ye know not what ye ask. Can ye drink such a
cup as I must drink; or undergo an immersion like that 23 which I must undergo ? They suid unto him, We can. He
answered, Ye shall indeed drink such a cup, and undergo an immersion like that which I must undergo. But to sit at my right hand and at my left I cannot give, unless to those for
whom it is prepared by my Father. 24
The ten hearing this were full of indignation against the Mar. 10, 4125 two brothers ; but Jesus calling them to him, said, Ye know Lu. 22, 24.
that the princes of the nations domineer over them, and the 26 great exercise their authority upon them. It must not be so * Three o'clock afternoon.
