NOTE.-Should any of the seamen or mariners have died at sea, or have been lost overboard on the passage, the fact will be reported at once by the master, and a note thereof made opposite to the name of such person so deceased or lost; as, for example, see steward. Should any seaman or mariner be discharged, or desert, a similar note of the fact must be made opposite to such deserter's or discharged seaman's name; as, for example, see carpenter and cook. In case any seaman or mariner has taken the name of any other seaman or mariner who may have deserted or otherwise absented himself after the clearing of the vessel, in the United States or otherwise, such seaman or mariner's correct and proper name must be entered opposite the name of the seaman or mariner so deserting or absenting himself; as, for example, see boatswain. And in the event of the seaman or mariner's taking the name of another seaman or mariner as aforesaid entering the hospital, being discharged, or deserting, the order to the hospital, certificate of discharge or desertion, and consular returns must contain the name of said seaman or mariner so taking the place of the absconding seamen; as, for example, see boatswain.
