THE CHICAGO SUNDAY EVENING CLUB.

was

The Chicago Sunday Evening club, a popular don: Harold Spender. Gen. Robert Nivelle of in France, founded Baron Howard S. Bliss of Syria, nonsectarian organization, 1907 by a group of Chicago business men un- d'Estournelles de Constant and many others. The music by a robed choir of 100 and der the leadership of Clifford W. Barnes, president since its inception. Franklin MacVeagh, a quartet of notable soloists, under the direcH. Armstrong, tion of Edgar Nelson, ranks with the be-t Adolphus C. Bartlett, Frank Norman Wait Harris and Charles L. Hutchin- choral work in the country. son were among the first trustees. It was designed to fill the need for a large religious service in the loop on Sunday night.

. The purpose of the organization was and is maintain a service of Christian innow "to spiration and fellowship in the business center and to promote the moral and religious welfare of the city." The meetings, held every Sunday night from October to June in Orchestra hall, 220 South Michigan avenue, are especially designed for traveling men spending resithe week-end in Chicago, hotel guests, dents of the downtown section, young people who drift toward the theater district on Sunday nights and for those without church affiliation throughout the city. Thousands of these dollars are spent annually to reach of classes, resulting in a total attendance 90,000 for thirty-five meetings in the season 1923-24.

Admission is free and there is always a waiting line before the doors are opened at 6:30. These early arrivals come to attend the 7 o'clock song service, at which Mr. Barnes gives a short informal Bible talk. The average attendance at this first meeting is around 2.300. The organ recital begins at 7:40 and the main meeting at 8 o'clock.

At this latter assembly a different speaker is seventeen heard each week and during the years of the club's existence distinguished men representing every denomination and walk of life, from this country and abroad, have addressed the club. Some of the most prominent are Secretary Charles E. Hughes, Gov. Charles Black, E. Milliken, Henry Van Dyke, Robert E. Speer, Harry E. Fosdick. S. Parkes William Howard Cadman. Russell Conwell, Taft, Gifford Pinchot, Dean Charles R. Brown lands like Sir and famous men from other Charles Wakefield, former lord mayor of Lon

Hugh

These meetings are broadcast by KYW and it is estimated that more than half a million persons in all parts of the United States, Canada and near-by countries listen in every Sunday night. The broad basis on which the club was formed appeals to all classes and creeds, and it seems to have become, through the radio, a national as well as civic enterprise. The principal beneficiaries of this broadcasting are the shut-ins, sick and helpless ones in hospitals, institutions for the blind and

other unfortunates.

The club is supported by the collections, sale of boxes in Orchestra hall and by subscriptions from public-spirited citizens. The annual budget is approximately $26,000. The officers do not receive any compensation and the largest expenditures are for music, rent, advertising and printing and speakers' expenses. OFFICERS. President-Clifford W. Barnes.
