The weight of diamonds and other precious stones is expressed in metric carats. The unit is the international carat of 200 milligrams. which has been officially adopted by United States and most of the countries in Europe. Until July 1, 1913, there were three different standards in use in the United States. although the one generally accepted was 205.3 milligrams. This was usually subdivided on the binary system, the smallest subdivision 4. being 1-64 of the carat. The new carat is subdivided on the decimal system. Pure gold is said to be twenty-four 25.66 carats fine. If it contains eight parts of a 51.32 baser metal or alloy it is only sixteen carats 76.99 fine. The carats therefore indicate the pro102.65 portion of pure gold to alloy. Most of the gold 205.30 used by jewelers is about fourteen carats fine. 307.95 having ten parts of alloy. Eighteen lives were lost in a fire which began at 5:40 p. m.. Dec. 26, 1923, in one of the buildings of the State Hospital for the Insane at Dunning, on the northwestern outskirts of Chicago. Three of the victims were attendants and the others were patients. They with many others were dining in one of the wings of an old wooden structure, known as the death house." when the alarm of fire was given. The flames spread with great rapidity and caused a panic among the hundred of patients in this and other buildings. In the confusion some of them escaped and found their way into the city, where they were later found and returned to the hospital, The coroner's jury, after a long investigntion, returned a verdict that the chief cause of the tragedy was the physical condition of the buildings at the asylum, which were of frame without fireproofing and with floors saturated with oil. 68 == 1 ounce. 12 ounces 1 pound.
