This was the result of a game the 150.000.000 acres of national forest land census taken by the forest rangers of the 440.000 head of deer. 48.000 elk, 4.300 United States in 1923. oose, 3,000 antelope, 12,000 mountain WHEN ARE PLANETS EVENING AND MORNING STARS? Some disputes and conflicting published statements upon this subject call for an explanatory word. In dealing with those planets within our own orbit there can be no conflict in this matter, as they cannot get opposite the sun, but with the so-called "major planets." outside the earth's orbit, the case is different, and conflicting data are published in almanacs. For over three-quarters of a century we have followed the practice of calling superior planets morning stars from conjunction with the sun to a point in the orbit called "western quadrature," when 90 degrees west of the sun, passing the meridian at 6 a. m. and rising about midnight; after that an evening star the remainder of the year. During the period between western quadrature and conjunction the planet must pass the "opposition" point when 180 degrees from the sun, rising as the sun sets and therefore shining all night. At such time it is obviously at once, or on the same days, an evening star and a morning star as those terms are applied to the inferior planets. During this period we term them "all night stars." after which they pass the meridian in the evening hours and, of course, set in the morning hours for a short time, when they pass to the west of the sun and become truly morning stars again. This is the most logical classification we can arrive at. HUNTER'S AND HARVEST MOON. The full moon nearest to Sept. 21 is popularly known as the "harvest moon." This is because the moon then rises for several consecutive evenings at nearly the same hour. giving an unusual number of moonlight evenings. This is the most noticeable in the higher latitudes and quite disappears at the equator. The "hunter's moon" is the fi moon following the harvest moon. |
