SHORTER CATECHISM.

Q. 1 WHAT is the chief end of man? A. Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him for ever.

EXERCISE.

Whom is man to glorify? Whom is man to enjoy ? For how long does God intend that man should enjoy him? Whose chief end is the glorifying and enjoying of God? What is the glorifying and enjoying of God to man? What is man to do to God?

EXPLANATIONS.

Man's chief end, The principal design for which man was made, and which he ought constantly and chiefly to seek after.

To glorify God, To become acquainted with, to exhibit in his life, and to declare unto others, the perfections of God.

Enjoy him, To derive all his comfort and happiness from the conscious possession of God's favour and love.

PARAPHRASE FORMED.

DOCTRINES SEPARATED AND PROVED.

1. The chief design of man's creation, in reference to God, was, actively to spread abroad his glory.-1 Cor. x. 31. Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

2. The chief design of man's creation, in reference to himself, was, the enjoyment of God.-Deut. xii. 18. Thou shalt rejoice before the Lord in all that thou puttest thine hands unto.

3. The foundation and end of every duty should be the glory of God.-Rom. xiv. 8. Whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord whether we live, therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.

4. All happiness here and hereafter must be derived from the enjoyment of God.-Psal. lxxiii. 25, 26. Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire besides thee. My flesh and my heart faileth; but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

Q. 2. What rule hath God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him?

A. The Word of God, which is contained. in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament, is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him.

EXERCISE.

What has been given to man as the rule by which he is to glorify and enjoy God? Where is the word of God contained? How many Testaments are there? Whose word are the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament? What is the word of God to us? What is the use of this rule given us by God? How many rules are there? What is that only rule which God has given us? Who are to be directed by this rule? Whom are we to glorify and enjoy by this rule ?
