larly of Mr. John-James Rouffeau," which has been well received by the Public; a very worthy and judicious French Clergyman was fo obliging as to recommend to their Attention, " Confiderations fur les Miracles de l'Evangile," by M. Claparede, as a Work well meriting their Notice, and very proper to be presented to the Public, as a Supplement to their former Fiece. Upon a perufal of M. Claparede's Work, they found their Opinion entirely coincide with that of their Friend and therefore immediately fet about the Tranflation of it, giving firft a Chapter by way of Specimen, in the Chriflian's Magazine, Vol. 7, p. 645, &c.

They do not chufe to fay any Thing in Recommendation of the Work; it is before the Reader, and he will judge for himself: But they make no Doubt that it will prove an acceptable Present to the rational and ferious Friends of Christianity, who cannot but approve and encourage every Undertaking, calculated to counterwork the repeated Efforts of fuch, as wish to fubvert thofe Foundations, which they will have the Mortification to find more and more strengthened and established, by their virulent but weak Attempts.

The Oppofition of Infidels, doubtless, ferves a variety of good Ends; the Apologies and Defences of Christianity produced in Confequence of that Opposition, are at least one happy Effect of it; but on this Subject we refer the Reader with great pleasure to Dr. Gerard's Second Differtation, intitled,

"I am often alarmed with the Fears of "fome good Men, who would perfuade me, "that Religion is in danger of being rooted "out of the Hearts of Men; and they "wonder to see me fo fanguine in the "Caufe. But I tell them, that I believe it " is with Religion as with paternal Affec"tion; fome profligate Wretches may foris get it, and fome may doze themselves fo long with perverse Thinking, as not to "fee any Reason for it: But in spite of all "the ill-natured and falfe Philofophy of "these two forts of People, the Bulk of "Mankind will love their Children. And "fo it is, and will be with the Fear of God " and Religion: Whatever is general hath " a powerful Caufe, tho' every one cannot "find it out." See "Letters written by Jonathan Swift, D. D. &c."
