When applying for a visa the alien should be very careful in answering the questions in the application correctly. I cannot emphasize too often the necessity of giving truthful answers. Many schemes have been resorted to by the alien to secure preference or visas from the American Consul abroad. The writer has knowledge of several instances where lawyers abroad have instructed the wives of resident aliens to ask for temporary admittance, on the pretense of searching for their lost husbands in the United States. The above demands were so abused that the Consuls abroad stopped issuing visas to married men. So another scheme was concocted by the aliens. Many applying for a visa stated that they were single, when as a matter of fact they were married. In one day forty fictitious divorces were procured by aliens in one consular district. Finally the Consuls got wise to the divorces schemes. The results were self-evident. The Consuls inaugurated very strict and exacting investigations before issuing visas, which resulted in additional delays and more hardships for the alien. Those who were fortunate enough to be admitted to the United States on false statements found out later that their frauds were detected, when they applied for the admittance of their wives and children. Several of them are now facing jail sentences and deportation. The writer knows of one instance where a married man with three children, in order to gain admittance, stated to the Consul abroad that he was a single man. He was admitted about a year ago. He recently made an application for the admittance of his wife and three children. When the Consul received the application, his former statement that he was a single man was immediately brought forward. The alien was arrested in the United States, charged with making false statement in his application for a visa, and he is subject to a $10,000.00 fine, or to 5 years imprisonment, or both, and to déportation, and is forever barred from admittance to the United States. There are many people abroad who claim to know more about our immigration laws than the best legal minds of our own country. There are also many fixers who pretend to have some influence or pull with the American Consuls. The aim and object of these fixers is obvious. They are like leeches upon the back of the aliens. The aliens are easy prey for all kinds of schemers, fakirs and fixers. The writer can truthfully assure the aliens that no one has any influence with any American Consul abroad. The Immigration Laws are just as important a part of our laws as any other Federal law, and are strictly and rigidly enforced by our government. The only way to gain admittance to the United States is through the proper and legal channels, as stated in this |
