And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. He1 that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes : and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which he2 did, believed on him. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. And one of them, named Caiaphas," being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, nor consider that it is expedient for you,3 that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; and not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. Then from that day forth they took counsel for to put him to death.

Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with the disciples.

he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: neither shall they say, Lo here! or,' there! for, behold! the kingdom of God is within you. And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and ye shall not see it. And they shall say to you, See here,2 see there: go not after nor follow them. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold! he is in the desert; go not forth: behold! he is in the secret chambers; believe not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall the coming of the Son of Man be in his day. But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation. And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son Matt. xxiv. 37-41. of Man. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the

day that Noe entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and destroyed them all, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; but the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all:b even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed. Remember Lot's wife. Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it. I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. Two women shall be grinding together at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? Matt. xxiv. 28. And he said unto them, Wheresoever the Lk. xvii. 37. body is, thither also1 will the eagles be gathered together.

Lk. xviii. 1-14.

And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that they ought always to pray, and not to faint; saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: and there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; yet because 2 that men ought

And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. avenge his own elect, which cry day though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of Man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus,' God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I acquire. But the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause ? tempting him. And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. And
