CHAP. II.

WHO ARE JUSTIFIED.

for

THEREFORE, thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art, that judgest wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.

3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness, and forbearance, and long suffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

5. But after thy hardness and impenitent heart, treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds;

7 To them who, by patient continuance in well-doing, seek for glory, and honour, and immortality, eternal life:

8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath;

9 Tribulation and anguish,

upon every soul of man that doeth evil; of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile.

10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good; to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile.

11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

12 For as many as have sinned without law, shall also perish without law; and as many as have sinned in the law, shall be judged by the law;

13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified:

14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves;

15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another ;)

16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,

18 And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;

19 And art confident that thou

thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,

20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge, and of the truth in the law.

21 Thou, therefore, which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?

22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?

|| that circumcision which is outward in the flesh :

29 But he is a Jew which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

CHAP. III.

JUSTIFICATION BY

FAITH.

WHAT advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?

2 Much every way; chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. 3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief

23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? 24 For the name of God is make the faith of God without blasphemed among the Gen-effect? tiles through you, as it is writ

ten.

4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; 25 For circumcision verily as it is written, That thou mightprofiteth, if thou keep the law :est be justified in thy sayings, but if thou be a breaker of the and mightest overcome when law, thy circumcision is made thou art judged.

5 But if our unrighteousness

uncircumcision. 26 Therefore if the uncircum-commend the righteousness of cision keep the righteousness God, what shall we say? Is of the law, shall not his uncir- God unrighteous who taketh cumcision be counted for cir- vengeance? (I speak as a cumcision? man,)

27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?

28 For he is not a Jew which is one outwardly; neither is

6 God forbid for then, how shall God judge the world?

7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory, why yet am I also judged as a sinner?

8 And not rather, (as we be

slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.

9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, thet they are all under sin;

10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not

one :

11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that docth good, no, not

one.

20 Therefore by the deeds of the law, there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law, and the prophets :

22 Even the righteousness of God, which is by faith of Jesus Christ, unto all, and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference:

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14 Whose mouth is full of forbearance of God; cursing and bitterness:

26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness; that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? 18 There is no fear of God be- of works? Nay; but by the fore their eyes.

19 Now we know, that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God:

law of faith.

28 Therefore we conclude, that a man is justified by faith, without the deeds of the law.

29 Is be the God of the Jews only is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also ;

30 Seeing it is one God which || for we say that faith was reckshall justify the circumcision oned to Abraham for righteousby faith, and uncircumcision ness. through faith.

31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid; yea, we establish the law.

CHAP. IV.

ABRAHAM'S FAITH AC

CEPTABLE.

WHAT shall we then say, that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory, but not before God.

3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for right

eousness.

4 Now to him that worketh, is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. 9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also?

10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which be bad, yet being uncircumcised; that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised, that righteousness might be imputed unto them also;

12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only; but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had, being yet uncircumcised.

13 For the promise that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

14 For if they which are of the law, be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.

16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also

slanderously reported, and as || 20 Therefore by the deeds of some affirm that we say,) Let the law, there shall no flesh be us do evil, that good may come? justified in his sight: for by whose damnation is just. the law is the knowledge of sin.
